I am in the market to upgrade from my stevens .270 I want a 270win or wsm bolt action, with a detachable magazine that does not have a floor plate over it. I would like to hear what you opinions are on what I should buy and lets stay below the $1500 mark.

Hey JRA, Ellwood Epps here in Orillia has quite the bargain on Stainless Synthetic Sako 85's in .260 Rem. or .338 Federal. I just bought one in .338 it was 1458 taxes in I beleive.

If you dont like that then I definitly say go for the Browning Xbolt!!! Gorgeous rifles that are built BEAUTIFULLY! I think a stainless synthetic is around 1000$.

Keep the Stevens as a backup gun and buy yourself a magnum.....338,300 300 wizzzum etc..........

I'd be getting a Sako A7. I see them listed on the EE for $1099 so you'd still have money left for a scope. :)
Just over 6 lbs and as accurate as many custom rifles. Great rig.

T3, I am really just speaking from my own limited experience though, haven't shot many guns other than Tikka and remington

I'm also looking for a new rifle and really like the Brownings but I have never shot one. Is there a big difference between the X-bolt and the BLR? Would the X-bolt give you more range?

To bad you can't live with the floor plate. You could keep the 270 and buy 5 more stevens for the same money. For that matter you could buy a used 700 det mag on the EE or gun show for well under a grand. A used parker hale in 300 win mag in a model 1200C should run $500 -$750. Man all kinds of good used guns out there for a fraction of the price your talkin about-----Cowboy
