So whats up with me?

im off for a hunt in the morning , i moved into a new joint , out the road same hood, but im closer to another patch of bushes an that is now my go to, a beautiful 10 minutes up the road puts me in the start of the bush, state forest.
anyway im all Geed up and the deer (sambar) are moving having just come out of Velvet in most instances and pushing into Hind country..... beauty.

So my big 30-06 Abolt is rearing to go......... always is....

i have the 130gr ppsn loaded, an a part of me is not so amped up an feeling incomplete because i do not have the 180gr ppsn sighted in to take with me...

big bloody deal , ya might be saying....

one side of me says that too, but the other feels that dark spot? all over 50grains of lead ?

keen to hear what may be the diagnosis from this brief debreif , i hope you can help!

perhaps it is choice these days? 130 loaded, 150 loaded and 180 loaded... but is it lack of options with many Grains to fill depending on my mood swings.

i dont think i can keep this up, i moved some on to keep the option simple, an now i am here!!

all the best and warm barrels, be safe!:ar15::ar15::ar15::ar15::ar15::ar15::ar15::ar15::ar15:

I guess the question begs to be asked. Would you hunt Sambar with a 270? If you would be comfortable hunting with a 270, which uses 130gr pills, then why would you be worried about 130's in your '06. I know guys that hunt moose in Canada with a 270, using 130 gr. Not my personal choice but they have been doing it since the 270 came out.

Is the load accurate? And are you confident you can put them where you want them to go? If so, it always comes down to shot placement, and bullet performance. If you're using a modern bullet with good penetration/expansion, and you put it where it counts, I don't see ant reason that the 130's won't perform at an acceptable level. On the other hand I do understand the feeling, bigger is better. I get the same feeling using 150 gr in my 308, rather than 165, or 180. It's never been an issue, but that little tickling feeling is always there.

this a big girl with te 130 ppsn!
text book , 50-60meters, went thru but went back in an broke her front leg an stayed in there.

You're spot on in real terms mate!

these deer like elk, vary alot from female to male body size and bone structure though.

as above, i dont see it exiting a stag unless rib to rib.

i will want a blood trail for Stags, almost everything runs off without the typical anchor shot.. spine or both shoulders.

130gr@3200 fps mv from 30-06? Then ~3000 fps impact at ~75 yds 130gr PPSN Woodleigh held together expanded well.

That is a very nice looking recovered bullet, Rhys. Tells me that the Woodleigh
is plenty tough. If that is typical of this 130, I would not hesitate to use it on
some bigger critters. Dave.

Only problem I really see is that it looks like some sneaky bugger put your bolt handle on the wrong side of your gun, while you weren't looking. :)

Just took a quick look on Woodleigh site - so their 65I bullet? .308" 130 grain PPSN Weldcore. They give recommended impact speed as 2,000 to 3,000 fps. You must have been near that recommended top end, and that bullet looks excellent. Of course, animal down and done is really the "test", isn't it?

Had that feeling when i went out for moose with the 06. usually im out with 180s and made switch to 150s and i just had hesitations and doubts when i went out. i know many use much smaller bullets but im so used to the 180s that i have confidence in. i almost hoped i didnt see a moose.

hey 48, id say a MV of 3000 to start out with the load i settled on accuracy over the few extra grains of powder, basically a 270, end of the day,

Gday Dave, So yeap, thats what i would expect almost every one of them recovered, to look like, maybe some less even petals on occaisons but from some other feed back i had with Donkeys, they 130gr were expanding as seen above almost every time! which one thing it ensures, is energy dump which i am liking.
typically i believe the 270win 130gr ppsn to act similiar, except possibly fly better again?

HAhahahah, You;re not the first fullah to think this has happened!!!

So with this load its 51.5gr of 2208... an touching on that 3000 with the 22 inch tube i would have believed! it sure seems flat, i ended up with something like 8 inch drop at 300m the other day in a field test aiming at a back line hold, i wouldnt even need to do so at 300 so far with only a roughly 2 inch high poi at 100m.

So well within its Reccomended bracket.. i think the test was the leg bone at the end of its travel, at such width, certainly slowed, but internally major damage.

hey fyi i got fogged in, an didn leave the house today LOL, instead started a buck hide.

plan on havin a look around tomorow at some stage witht he 130s still... i had written down the poi differences an scope clicks but since moving i cannot find it, will one day this week re do that for 180gr zero
