I need help identifing a rifle.

I think it is a Danish Krag-Jorgensen. That crown looks like the Danish crown marking.
Now, I don't know what is the chambering for this particular model. The U.S. Krags were chambered in 30-40 Krag.
How's the wood? any pics of the front handguard, bands and swivel?
PP.:)

$50 bucks....Ill take it...

Honestly....I have seen sported Krags go for around $150 at auction and maybe 200-250 in a store.

What kind of shape is the bore in?

I've got questions, questions, questions if you guys don't mind answering them as well. :D

I've never seen a krag before so you'll have to excuse my ignorance but that 'thing' on the right side, that is what?

Klunk, you've brought up auctions a few times already and I would like to know how the transfer of a firearm works at an auction. Is everything taken care of right there or do you take it home and then register from home or some such? Where does one find out about such auctions anyway?

Yep, one of 4 or 5 variations of the Danish Krag-Jorgenson (which one depends on the barrel length and wood, etc.); these should be chambered in 8x58R, and the "thing" on the side is a door that lets you load the magazine.

Hi Polish-Jack .... :)

I'm not exactly sure what kind of Norwegian Krag you have because the pics don't show forward of the handguard. I collect Krags and have found two web sites particularly valuable.

Krag Rifle Collectors Forum (click here)http://www.jouster.com/cgi-bin/krag/krag.pl

Krag Collectors Association Web Site (click here)http://www.kragcollectorsassociation.org/

The latter has an excellent photo section of different kinds of Krags.

The two best collector's reference books on Krags are William S. Brophy "The Krag Rifle" or Frank Mallory's "Krag Rifle Story" (out of print).

Here's my two Krags. I currently only own Springfield Arms collector's pieces, but have an advertisement (click here)http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38332 running in the EE forums, if you're interested in selling or trading.

........... and here's a bunch more pics of both the carbine and rifle versions of this genre.

A guy I know called me once a few weeks after talking to him at a gun show and telling him I liked 6.5x55 rifles and he said a buddy had a 6.5 Krag for sale.

I declined.

Could that rifle you have be a 6.5, or was it just the Norwegians that had a 6.5 Krag?

Oops, sorry, Badgerdog nailed it (I should've looked at ALL the pictures); that's a Norwegian crest on the receiver, so it should be in 6.5x55, but we'd need more info to know exactly which version.

Norwegian Krags were all in 6.5x55, relatively common on the East Coast, where they were regularly stolen from Norwegian sealing ships. In these, the magazine flips open down and to the right.

Danish Krags are called a Model 89 and are in 8x58Rimmed Krag. The magazine flips open to the front. These are scarce, as very few were ever released and no ammo released, and, anyway, that nice Austrian painter with the Chaplin moustache stole them all.

American Krags everybody knows, are in .30-40 Krag.

ALL are wonderfully smooth actions but a little stiff until you get used to them.

WISH I could find a decent barrel for a Norwegian.....

It is definitely a Norwegian Krag cal 6.5x55. Danish Krag had the mag door hinge at the front not the bottom.

Denmark and Norway both used a Krag design. Off the top of my head the fifference between the two was caliber ( 6.5 x55 for one and 8MM for the other ) and the way the magazine opened up ( one hinges down, the other hinges forward. I think the Krag shown is a 6.5 and probably started life as a carbine judging by the rear sight. Original condition Krags from either country, besides the US version, are pretty expensive. Mine was a beautiful, flat shooter that was brand new but that was over 44 years ago. Joe
