I need help IDing a Remington 700 in 300 Weatherby!

Hello there, I just purchased a Remington 700 in 300 Wby. It has a 24" blued barrel with a floor plate and wears a gloss wooden stock. Looks kind of like a BDL deluxe stock to me. The odd thing is there are no holes for open sights. Didn't all BDLs have open sights? Now I am not certain the gun is even a BDL and the owner isn't certain either. Haven't received it yet but the seller says the serial number starts with a "C". The Remington website says the 300 why was offered in the classic in 1989. Regular offering 1990-2000 and custom shop from 2002-to present. Any suggestions what this gun might be if not a regular BDL? Thanks in advance. Art

It isn't a C grade. I will bet the rifle doesn't have a faux ebony (black) fore end tip does it? And The checkering is very tight and quite high? It is very likely the Classic from 1999. They are great rifles, I hope you enjoy it. The C serial prefix is from the late ninety's, I have owned a couple. Buy some RL22 and have fun.

No you are right, and the C prefix is from the eighty's not the nintey's. I should drink coffee before typing (if you think I screwed that up, you should see the on line banking I did immediately after).
 
of the 80-100 Rem 700's I've owned and dated by the barrel date code, I've figured out that the C prefix runs from about 1984 into the mid nineties.

I have one here now that is C64###XX, the barrel date code was 1988,
another is C65###XX and dates 1989
and I had a C66###XX that was 1990....

I'll bet your 1989 Classic is a C65###XX or C66###XX serial number.
 
Well, after lots of help from great gunnuters (who are alot more knowledgable than me) it looks as though the gun could be a 1989 Classic wearing a BDL type stock.

For those wondering, have a look at the pictures on the Exchange section page 14, I think, dated 01 Dec 2008 and see what you think! Still digging for more info. and any opinions are welcome as it's getting quite interesting now. Again thanks guys! Art

OK, I looked at the pictures, and that rifle definitely has a BDL stock. The BDL stock had some subtle variations over the years. However, any magnum in the BDL series came with open sights attached to the barrel, so the fact that your barrel has no holes drilled to attach open sights leads me to believe that what you have is indeed a 1989 "Classic" Barrelled action stuffed into a BDL stock, for some unknown reason. [I personally prefer the Classic stock over the BDL design] Where the original stock is would be anyone's guess. But it will be fine the way it is. Regards, Eagleye.
