After about 1 year of target / standing slow fire at my local club I'm ready to start down the IPSC road. Thing is.... I don't know how to set-up the gun up.

I currently have a Colt Gold Cup Trophy in .45acp, and right now it's still bone stock with the two mags it came with 7/8 rounds. I have the 16 pound recoil spring in there, as I never did like shooting the low power "targret" loads.

I reload and have that all sorted out, but I need advice on gun set-up. I was thinking

I already have a holster, eye and ear protection.

5 x Ed Brown 8 round mags
Dlask Magwell with checkering
Novak Fiber optic front sight
VZ G10 grips with the Colt logo
2 x extra 16 pound springs
Grip tape for the front strap (it lacks checkering)

Is there any actual benefit to a One Piece guide rod/recoil assembly, or is the old G.I style the best.

Am I missing anything?

Consider selling the 45 and get a 40 or 9mm instead?
This is my local experience and this may be different out west...

Guys trying to compete with 45 are often stuck with brass shortage.
I known people that budget was not an issue, and still dropped 45 as brass was a b**** to find.

In this optic, if the reply is something like, i can change later this is just to get me started... i'd leave it as is, other than what you already purchase and run it.
In IPSC round count get's up there and quick, after 5000+ rounds under 4-5 months that 45 choice may be reconsidered.

If you are flowing in 45 brass, i can't help you with spring weights as i'm used to 9/40.
Missing an extended mag catch to your list, Ed brown makes a nice one, found at double tap sports,
I prefer one piece guide rod, and a heavy one, more weigh up front,
If you don't have ambi safeties, another thing that could prove useful,
If you or someone you know truly how to polish an 1911 sear/hammer, getting your trigger to 2 1/4 - 2.5lbs is very nice for an 1911 platform,
I also ran all my 1911s with aftec extractor, change extractor springs every 10,000 rounds and runs like new again,
Extended firing pin with siliconised firing pin spring, if you lighten mainspring which can help with trigger weight, i always went 17# in 9mm/40, using federal primers

My setup for a 1911 competition gun includes:

Rear target sight (Bomar or better yet SVI), no dots or lines, plain black with wide notch (.150”)
Front sight - fiber optic
Slim grips
Ed Brown extended mag release
3lb long trigger
10 round Wilson mags for .45, Tripp Cobramags for 10mm or 38 super
Checkered front strap - 25 lpi or if not checkered VZ grips
Checkered under trigger guard
14lb spring
full length one piece guide rod or stock stubby I don’t find a difference
Magwell - lot’s of options

Here’s my Valtro which is my ultimate .45 (minus the extended 10rnd mag)

I’d recommend 5 mags on your belt and 1 in the gun (for a total of 6). Otherwise you are good-to-go with your proposed mods.

Don’t spend a bunch of time and money tweaking the gun until you’ve spent a season shooting Classic. Then you can decide what you need to modify from a more informed place. As was stated above, you may want to shoot Minor and get a 9mm - or continue with Major and switch to .40.

Lots of good suggestions here. I would suggest using what you have as it sounds like a good start. Nothing wrong with classic major (could be a slight disadvantage depending on the match)
Do you have a belt rig set up?

45 was great at the matches I could pick up my brass. The ones I couldn't not so much. Mixed 45 acp brass was selling for $130 a thousand.
Talk to Sean at Freedom Ventures, he helped me get set up.
Talk to Ken at Phoenix shooting range in Edmonton too.

When i was making a go for it and had objectives set, i was going for major.
My HF was pretty darn close to one full point higher in major than minor.
Before my first season in major, spent a 4 month winter dry firing 50-60 reloads per day every single day.
Burned through a techwell magwell that winter, and could also reload quickly with the lights shut in the end.

If you get reloads down and commit to them, the bump in major PF points is a very good incentive.
A trojan with a bull barrel, 200gr bullets, and 12# recoil spring + shock buff, could shoot surprisingly flat...

Thanks for all the great advise.

I will bump the mags up too 6, just use the sight I have on it for now, and practice the he'll out of my reloads.

I get started in IPSC this summer.

Thanks guys.

I just completed my blackbadge and did my qualifying match. I’m using a 9mm and 6 mags. It is more fun than just range shooting. I learned lots from experienced shooters I met there. I still have a lot to learn and am looking forward to gaining more experience and climbing up the ladder. Good luck on IPSC.

No sounds good so far. You may want to add an extended magazine release though. Also, be prepared for a sore back, I mean after picking up all your brass.

I shot classic major in 45 for several years and really enjoyed it. Was cheap as well reloading 200g lswc from drg. Those huge bullet holes really helped me see my hits!!!!

But, policing brass gets old and no one in the top 10 is shooting major anymore. 9mm is the way to go and I love my new gun. YMMV
