New shooter here. I've been shooting since late October and I really suck. I am wondering if anyone would be intersted in getting together and helping me out? I shoot at the Ridgedale Rod and Gun Club in Matsqui. I'm shooting a 9mm Sig 226. I live in North Delta. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Rich

They may sound silly, but have you asked some members at the club you belong to show you the ropes.

Don't know how your club is set up, and I'm new to the sport, but at ours you just ask for help and there is always someone willing to help, or at least recommend someone for you to ask. One thing I've learned in the gun community they love to help and provide advice!

Good luck

sorry bud but i don't know where the F_ _ _ that is
ask your club to set up with a mentor.....i wish i had a hot gunfighting chick mentor........whoa !!! sorry slipping

I work afternoons and it is difficult to attend club functions so I didn't even think about someone from my club. Only been a member for a few months and everytime I go there it is pretty much empty. Was hoping I would run into someone out there one day. So far no luck. I will contact someone at the club via the club e-mail lists.. Thanks for the suggestions

D344, take a look around for the Black Badge course. It will really improve your shooting, safety and comfort level with your pistol.

Other then that, if you see someone shooting better then you at the range talk to them, most people are happy to share advise.

Get a .22 and learn to shoot it first.

If you are not going to do that then either load your own ammo or buy some lighter reloads. 9 mm can be a ##### to learn to shoot on.

Get some snap caps and practice dry firing.

Get some dummy rounds and at the range load (or better yet have someone else load) in random patterns the dummy and live rounds. You don't want to know what is in the chamber. Concentrate on shooting the gun and sight alignment. Don't worry much about the target. When you have a live round the gun will shoot the bullet. If it were a dummy then it will show you how bad your flinch is by the movement of the barrel.

You want to train your body to not react to the noise and the recoil.

Now if you are shooting two hands then you also have to learn to keep a consistent grip with both hands. Some people say you should be holding the gun 2/3 with your strong hand and 1/3 supported by your weak hand. Whatever works but the important part is a consistent grip. Hold the gun firmly but don't strangle it.

Handgun shooting is not as easy as it seems (if you want to hit where you are aiming). Don't worry about the shots on the target at first. Learn to shoot the gun. Concentrate there, and remember you have to focus on the front sight, not the rear sight and definitely not the target. If you see the target clearly then you are missing it.

Good luck.

Handgun shooting

Some very good advice given in some posts. I have many times tried to help a beginning shooter with the old fashioned, one hand and arm shooting, and here is a trick I found worked. I would fully explain about keeping the sights lined up, concentrate on the front sight, and squeeze the trigger until it went bang. Then I would say to help him/her be able to better concentrate on the sighting, we will put your target up backwards! That is, have just the bare, white paper, to concentrate on while you shoot. They would then fire ten shots at the paper and to their startling surprise, when the target was turned over, the score would be the best they had ever fired! Try it.
