The three holes beneath the rail are for a side mount scope base. That was quite a common scope mounting system back then.

I still have a 308 Norma Magnum set up like that in a Remington 721.

Does that have an ebony forend tip? The checkering looks too nice for it to be a standard grade, so I'm thinking it's either a super grade or some custom work has been done on it. Looks like some engraving on the floorplate as well, but it's hard to pick up in the photo. The extra holes detract from the value, but the improvements may bump it up a bit. Hard to pin down.

What are the other 2 screw holes for? I count 5 not including the peep attachment holes.

The long leaf Lyman 48 sight is a classic all by itself.
It is a very interesting rifle with some period of use warts.

If they’re all threaded my guess is two different bases were on it before. That looks like what happened and certainly reduces the value somewhat.

Some side mounts used three threaded, and two not. The two were fitted tightly with unthreaded pins, and were to increase the stability of the base against recoil. The Paul Jaeger side mount was one of the better known mounts and used three and two. That is a very strong system, and is the one on my 308 Norma Mag.

I think Griffin and Howe may have also used that occasionally. They certainly used side mounted scopes on some of their finest rifles.

I was told the name of the side mount but do not remember and he said good luck finding it.

No forend tip,the engraving is very good and so is the checkering.

If it's a supergrade it's a factory original.
If it's had some custom work it isn't.
No difference to a hunter like me but to a collector extra holes and 3rd party mods detract from the value.

The era before the infamous Riflemans Rifle.
I'd own one in a heart beat.

Too bad those holes weren't filled by the altered mount.
The sight on there is no slouch either.

Gal has lots of history and beauty marks.

Price...……….?...……...tuff one.

$550-$650?

Maybe more, but without in one's mitts to fawndle, it would only be worth what one offers up
from the asking price.
Start at $750 and see where it goes.
Could be you already have been gitt'in pm's.
Spring fever, dontchahknow.

I also had seen this on line. The score here is the sight worth from $260 to $300 more if sold to USA. These could have been bought new with sight installed at factory. Rifle has custom work that checkering looks worked on, and engraving is not factory. The extra holes are not cool, side mount scopes were necessary because the bolts on 54s came up to high and would hit a scope. The Cool stuff is its control round fed, stripper clip can be used to feed it. Based off of Mauser K98 action and its Winchesters first available to public sporting bolt gun. Value maybe $800. I need that sight if you want to put a scope on it.
I have a first year 270 WCF 54. First year for the 270 WCF 1925

Supers had full sling swivels, raised comb, or Monte Carlo stock, also had Super grade on floor plate. Along with black fore-end tip. Probably more things I just don't remember.

I have never seen a 54 designated as a Super Grade. This one had had the checkering pattern extended on the fore arm for sure and some extra border work done on the grip. The screw holes are unfortunate but from a function standpoint, it doesn't really matter. I have a model 54 which I barreled in 256 Newton and put into a McMillan stock. I also filled in the notch in the bolt and installed a Mauser bolt stop. I drilled a new front hole in the receiver to accept Model 70 bottom metal. Of course, I also put on a new bolt handle. GD
