Hello guys and gals. I'm looking to buy a in between rifle. This will be for christmas. I would like a more standard type rifle ie; bolt action, lighter weight, stainless, detach mag, and enough power to take a deer to 400 yards( I know that's uncommon I just want to have the option) and be decently accurate. I reload too. I have shorter range rifles and one heavy target rifle but I don't have any in between. I'm not a savage fan. My ideas are 1- Ruger Gunsite scout,
2- Sako finlite in either a 270 or 6.5 55
3- Tikka T3 lite in 270 or 6.5 55
What are your thoughts?

If you are considering a sako finlite, and it is in your price range then don't even begin to consider the T3 lite. I know that there's tons of people that love em, I don't but I've got nothing against them, but if you can afford the finlite it's in a whole other level than the T3. 270, 6.5x55, 7mm-08, 260, 308, 30-06 are all going to do the job for you. Since you want light I would go with the 7mm-08, 260 or 308 since they are short action. If your heavy target rifle is 308 then it allows you to share brass and some other components.

I've got a Ruger GSR myself, and I really like it. I'd feel confident using it on anything from paper to moose...as soon as I learn to shoot properly.

That said, it seems that in general Sako comes ahead in reviews. If you find your way to Edmonton I'd be willing to let you try my Ruger to see how you like it.

It was actually my first rifle and I've only taken it out shooting once. Shot 99 through it and started with a 1' group before adjusting sights. Got it down to 6" by the end of the day with random fiddling and some experience gained. Others seem to be getting a reliable 2" but I'm not a good enough shot for that. No scope for it. I intended it to be my hardcore irons gun...then I got a metal fragment in the eye at work and now I have some lovely scar tissue and remnant rust and cornea swelling in my shooting eye that making things a bit hard to see. Haven't taken it to the range recently to compare but I think I'll need a scope to be hitting anything under a foot at a hundred meters. Still need to get my eyes checked for perscription glasses. Life is conspiring to make me use optics of one form or another.
