I just got this from somone at work and he has no idea what it is or were it came from. He said his grandfather gave it to him.

The mauser is in 30-06 but there are no calibre markings at all and only a few stamps. I was hoping if someone could tell me some of the markings.
There is only a serial number under the scope and I will run it when I take the scope off in the future. The markings under the barrel are W and under it 3-18.

any help or input would be great, I hope the pictures work, first time trying to post. thanks.

AND with the original Winchester March, 1918 barrel still in place.

These things are excellent hunting rifles and you can make them SUPER accurate with a little TLC.

Dollar value doesn't really matter: they are a chunk of history, they MADE history, and now they are continuing on in peactime mode.

I really have no idea why they are so cheap oin the second-hand market. Where ELSE are you going to find a Magnum-length pure Mauser action cheap????? But that's what they are.

Back in the 1960s, guys used to rechamber these to handle the .308 Norma Magnum: massive cartridge, but it fits in there real nice. The .300 Win Mag is a little longer, but it can also be done. Nothing wrong with the old '06, though: it will anchor anything in North America if you can place your bullet, and the rifle is certainly accurate enough to do that for you.... as long as you do your part, anyway!

Nice toy! I have its mate and it has no price-tag.

Have fun!

a buddy thinks it might be a norwegian kongsberg m59

does any one know the symbol that looks like the circle with a wing on the bolt?

Listen to Smellie, and tell your buddy not to quit his day job... ;)

Enjoy the rifle! They are amazing actions, and a hoot to shoot! :)

Tung oil/BLO for the stock. Light gun oil for the action, bolt, and barrel.
They are forgiving old girls.
