hi guys, i need as help as i can get. my Dad, (Knott) has a RPAL and only buys revolvers:bangHead:, and i need to convince him to buy a semi-auto. so please, post everything good about semi-autos in the comment section.
it would really help. i would love to take a glock or a m9 out to the range. so please, post pics, the good things about them and why he should buy one.
thank you!

Revolvers are nice, but nothing beats a quality semi auto. They are a different feeling, and take some getting used to, but once you go semi, you won't go back... except for the old favorates.

Mmmm. 1911 goodness. :D

The easiest way to convince him may be as i had to do with my father, get yourself a 1911 and let him try it. You will need your own rpal eventually anyways..

My CRFSC instructor said that "semi-automatics are the Devil." He also said that "semi-automatics are the most unsafe firearm out there" and that they were suited only for "police officers and soldiers."

Maybe your Dad took his course from that same instructor.

uh, this thread was for support only. i guess i should've said that :/

It's an age thing, and like most others, you will grow out of it by age 14, and see the beauty and benefits of the revolver.

ok, i can see that people arent reading my post right "post everything good about semiautos" i thought the people would know not to put negative things.

I wish I could come up with something "convincing" to say that would sway your Dad to try out a Semi. But without knowing why he doesn't want one to begin with, there's no way we could create a positive argument for them.

However ... Revolvers and Semi's are two different cretures, and people shoot them for very different reasons. I have both, and enjoy both equally.

Really, I think you need to consider yourself very lucky that your Dad enjoys handguns at all and that you aren't "stuck" with only having the old Cooey .22 rifle to shoot. Use the revolvers as much as he will let you - everything you learn with them will help you double when you do finally get to use a Semi regulalry.

Here some questions for you?
What is yoru Dad's reason for not wanting a Semi? Why do you think a Semi is better than a Revolver? Why do you want to shoot them?

ps.s "cool" can not be part of your answer ;)

As for the "Good" about Semi's ... (Good points are in brackets)

The will make you make friends at the local ammo/reloading supply store near you as you'll be burning a lot more ammo. (Personal Development Skills)

They will teach you patience and attention to detail as they require a LOT more time spent cleaning and maintaining them than a Revolver. (Focus and Attention to Detail Skills)

They tend to make a person shoot more ammo per trip to the range - which means you spend more feeding them. This means you need a job to afford to shoot them regularly. Getting and keeping a job is a very good thing. (Life Skills)

There are endless options to put on them - scopes, Red Dots, different barrels for different calibers, grips, etc.. These all cost moeny ... another reason to have a job to afford one. (Life Skills)

IPSC. Semi's are certainly needed for IPSC competition. But that again means large amounts of ammo - which means making friends at the store and having a job to pay for the ammo :)

Honestly, I'm trying to find any one reason why a Semi is "better" than a Revolver ... and there simply isn't one unless you are truly interested in IPSC. But then you could always try out Cowboy Action Shooting with revolvers if the faster shooting styles are what draws you in right now.

You are asking us to argue the age old Ford vs. Chevy fight - each has its uses, and there are those that will never drive the other one - but neither is "better" thant he other.

One last thought for you ... (this is meant as friendly advice - not a lecture!)

Perhaps instead of asking us to come up with the reasons, you should be trying to find a way to articulate why you want to shoot one in a way that appeals to your Dad. It is entirely possible your Dad is open to the idea, but is holding off until you can show the required amount of thought and dedication that he wants to see. Semi's do take a different mindset to shoot safely - and I'm not saying you aren't safe - but it's possible you Dad simply hasn't seen what he is looking for from you yet.

IMagius, those are some very good insights. He is young, as were we all, & knowledge comes with age. He is eager to learn but impatient.

I have more revolvers than semi-autos. But the semis have thier purposes too.
The Ruger Mk II is absolutely accurate and cheap to shoot.
The rimfire Star Model F was purchased solely because my young daughters thought the above mentioned Ruger was too heavy for them. The Spanish made Star with it's 4.2 inch barrel, became thier favorite plinking 22.
I have a 1911, (subdued stainless steel Colt 1991A1 actually) well because every gun enthusiast should have at least one .45 auto, and this is THE pre-eminant 45, IMO only.
I have a Czech made Cz-52 for various reasons, one of which is during REFORGER-NATO exercises in then West Germany with the CF, this was the 7.62x25mm pistol the 'other guys' would have had used against us, if the Cold War heated up in the southern sector. Thank God this never happened.

But if I want to knock stuff around at distance I grab my Dan Wesson 44 Magnum with it's long eight inch barrel and hot handloads. Or if I want to punch paper with accuracy and less noise & recoil, its the single shot 22 LR Hammerli Model 150 for one handed offhand shooting competition at 50 meters.

There you go my young friend, & I have no idea how this will help you out.
This from one older gun enthusiast to a younger one.

Lol, read between the lines of these above posts, grasshopper.

The support you seek is in the sagely advice therein regarding value of revolvers at hand versus Glocks and Berettas which are not.

In other words: don't look a gift horse in the mouth regarding your dad ONLY having revolvers.

In other other words: those with the gold, make the rules - until you are paying the bills, enjoy shooting your dad's revolver and his ammo, and not force him to buy a gun that you like.

Go to gun club or range enough times, not only will you get valuable practice, but surely there will be someone there sometime who will let you try their Glock or Beretta if you ask nicely.

Whether revolver or semi, they both go bang. The sad truth is 90% of how they handle is the same. The other 10%, such as faster reloading-trigger feel-hand positioning, while are different and interesting if you've never tried them, aren't the end all and be all.

You have an incredible leg up on a lot of people with simply being able to shoot with your dad and his guns together. I only wish I did.

Okay, this is maybe over the line but.....

As many a cgn'er has said.

Tell him to buy a semi auto or his di<k will fall off!

Just kidding. The way I see it, his money, his choice.

Now if you were to offer a contra deal to him, something like you foregoing a Christmas present of some value, he uses that money to buy a semi, you one day get it anyway.

Win, win scenario.

Funny thing is Dad has a High Standard S101. It is a great semi 22cal, & lots of fun to shoot. I think my son has a Glock fetish...LOL
Myself I have a lever fetish otherwise known as Marlinitis.

Yup, sounds like the lad has Black Plasticitis. While not a terminal disease, it can be a lifelong condition for some. Hopefully he'll grow out of it one day ... before it spreads to the long gun part of his brain and he joins the tacti-cool crowd :p

Leveritis is something I currently suffer from as well, though mine is worse than yours as I am effected by more than just Marlins.
