i keep haveing trouble with critters in my sheep pen durning the night ,so i'm looking to get a night vision scope for my 243 ,any suggestion's oh yea i'm not loaded so i can't spend like 2 grand on it.what really work's and whats out there?

I have been wondering about night vision as well,I have no idea about it and have never even looked through one.would mounting up a cheap monacle behind your scope work at all? (missed my wolf at dusk the other night)

To the OP: cheaper/easier is to get one of the million candlepower spotlights from CT and throw a red filter on it. The animals aren't spooked by red light, and you can just use your regular sights

Shouldn't you also mention that red won't effect your eye's natural "low light vision"? :D

Night scopes are prohibited in :canadaFlag:so is hunting at night:eek:

is that you that keeps rippin up my sheep:HR:
try that some more after i get my scope :50cal:
:canadaFlag: regs have no buisness on my farm if im using a spot light or night vision too control pest ,if i posted some pic's of the torn up sheep mybe you'd think twice about your post.

1. Hunting regulations are provincial, therefore they are not all the same in all parts of Canada.

2. In at least some jurisdictions, control of predators that threaten livestock is not subject to hunting regulations.

3. Night vision equipment is not illegal in Canada, although some jurisdictions prohibit the use of it for hunting.

4. Check the local regulations.

How would pictures of your sheep make me think twice about my post? I was so certain that night scopes where prohibited I would have bet the farm.Maybe there just prohibited to hunt game animals with. Everyone I talk to seems to think they are too,oh well you learn something everyday I guess that's what these forums are all about. If its legal to shoot coyotes with a night scope then I,ll be looking for one as well:cheers:

i was aware that it is against reg's to use night vision to go hunting ,but for pest control i hope not, cause i need to do somthing soon and i don't like the idea of using poision ,i don't think that its legal anymore anyway. oh if your giving the farm away anyway i'll still take it:cheers:

The ones I've seen are mounted in front of the scope since the NV won't work well trying to draw light from through the scope, whereas vice versa is fine. Hence why some of the PGW rifles have an additional strip of rail just forward of the scope.

P.S. Let us know what you catch when you do shoot the boogey creature eating your sheep :D

I personally think it's westical now that he's not tethered to the internet and CGN 24/7 ;)

Everyone I talk to that doesn't own guns seems certain that handguns are illegal too. I suspect you'll find that there is a big difference between hunting coyotes with night vision and defending your livestock at night. You would also have a hard time proving you were only hunting coyote if you were stopped out hunting at night. You would likely be charged, the police/DNR get all bent out of shape at people running around with a rifle at night, especially with night vision, and I imagine you would probably be wearing a ghili suit and face paint just because that's the type of guy you strike me as lol.

Night vision isn't regulated in Canada, but in most locations discharging firearms at night is regulated. Check with your provincial regulations. There are also permits that can be issued in many areas to get exceptions to the rules if that suits you. If you're on the prairies and so far from the nearest house that no one will ever hear the shot, then I might personally not go that route, but I would always suggest following the law.

One warning, don't order most types of night vision from the US. They may be unrestricted for civilians to buy there, but most versions (except the type mentioned that weigh 20lbs and work like crap) are illegal to export and may be seized at the border. Check the regulations on the US side carefully if you are considering buying there.
