I am looking for a good quality, reliable air rifle to be used primarily for hunting and secondly for target practice. Two requirements are that it be quiet and reasonably accurate (as I intend on practicing in the backyard).
All I know is that there are 3 types to choose from; pneumatic, spring, and CO2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Also what brand names are good and which should I stay away from?

Well you need it to be quiet so a spring powered rifle would be your best bet, what is your budget? what kind of game do you plan on hunting?
 
As previously stated, do you have your PAL? I would say the best bang for your buck would be the Gamo big cat, shoots 1200 fps, has Gamo's reputation for excellent reliability and quality, easy cocking force, and decently quite. All for 150.00 at Bass Pro.

Do "springers" last longer/ do they keep their accuracy longer?

I don't know why any gun wouldn't last if it was of reasonable quality and maintained. And I can't think of why the accuracy would change if it was maintained. I have heard of people replacing mainsprings due to failure but haven't experienced this myself. I wouldn't worry about it.
 
Don't most of the springers come as break barrels? I have heard that after a while (depends on gun) the barrel droops and needs constant adjustment.
 
I still have my Gamo I purchased when I was 12. It is still very accurate and powerful
(perfect for squirrels & rabbits). Not bad for 22 years old. I would buy another Gamo
without question.

haha my point exactly! Gamo makes a damn fine product, I personally have never had to replace a spring before and my barrel has never dropped. If your barrel is dropping it is in regards to your spring or locking ball/pin (less tension means your cocking rod is not pushing up the barrel as high or your locking ball is worn out)
