I 'need'

THANKS!

Now primarily, I'm looking for a friend, companion so I indicated to her, 90% pet 10% hunting dog.
.. as are we... had an Irish Wolfhound previously ... would also show an intruder where everything was ... with special emphasis on directions to the Fridge! Our next door Labs kick up a very brief fuss if someone is wandering around the perimeter ..very late at night .. thats good enough for me.

A fine yellow . We breed labs . Currently we have 2 female choc labs and one black female being sired by a stocky chocolate male. At the moment we have 17 pups a week old today . It is amazing the different attitudes possible in them . Hunter ( choc female ) Def let's you know when a stranger is thinking about comin near the house and let's them know that she knows and its her house and best behave ,while happy go lucky tundra the male , greets all with a smile .

Want pics ?

By all means. If I had the room, I'd have one of each colour:).

I'm a far cry from having any degree of expertise when it comes to dogs. Basically, most of what I've had previously were German Shorthairs and primarily for hunting upland birds and as a family pet. I found them to be excellant on upland birds, great nose, soft mouth and seemed to work a little closer than the English Pointers some of my friends had. Good family dog and great with kids.
I've always liked the looks of the Yellow Lab and shortly after retirement, I got one, Tikka.

Great dog but sadly, I never got to try her much in the field. She was diagnosed very early on as having Cryptococcus but lost her battle with it at age seven, which was longer than most survive with it.
That was a little over a year ago and we decided to get another, which we just did. Not having hunted with Labs all that much, but as I indicated to the breeder, at this point in time in my life, requirements have changed a little. Now primarily, I'm looking for a friend, companion so I indicated to her, 90% pet 10% hunting dog.
Generally speaking, I've found the Lab I've had to be very friendly and easy going and not a mean bone in her body. They're possibly the furtherest thing there is from a guard dog or home protector. I think our first Lab would not only invite an intruder in but also show them where all the goodies are.

This one, Tessa, started out on her first night with us by waking us about once every two hours. To be expected. I look forward to having her as my buddy and working with her a little, on birds.

So sorry to read of the loss of Tikka. As a dog lover it always pulls at the heart strings.

What a beautiful pup, Tessa, though.

Thanks for sharing & showing the pictures and I did enjoy seeing them. Tessa is only the second Lab I've ever had and while my experience with the breed is limited, they have rapidly become one of my favorites. At the moment, ;)a little more sleep at night would be a good thing but in the meantime, I can live with that. As I indicated earlier, if I had the room,:) I'd have one of each colour.

Labs are surprisingly quick learners and eager to please, so if you desire the pointing of your old GSP's with a little training I am sure Tessa would be happy to do it. Although they lack the style of a true pointer on point my labs have learned to point on their own just from hunting pheasants with friends who run setters English pointers.
Sadly I have been without a dog for the past 3 years but I am finally ready for a new pup, just trying to decide between breeds at the moment.

Guys, meet my new buddy:D:D, Tessa. She's a sweetheart and here's my 1st photo after we brought her home this afternoon.

Oh my.....Your new baby look's a lot like my little boo did 3yrs. ago. I'm tearing up just lookin' at the photo, and
Sherman is right now, climbing up and huggin' on me, makin' it hard to type this in. What a great score!!!
Now you need to get a Dyson vac, cause these little angels shed a bunch.:)

Thats a beautiful pup Johnn!! Hope you dont mind me hijacking the thread a little?!! Perhaps a PM if some advice is available ... Certainly apologize again for the Hijack

Well would welcome advice and guidance on this ..we are currently looking at bringing a new member into the family and have looked at lots of breeds and dogs (including rescues). But in order to survive around SWMBO .. dog has to be smart! And it must know when discretion is the better part of valour -- either that or be a damn big dog that can take care of itself! Intelligence is probably our number 1 factor and for that reason we have looked at Doberman's, GSD, Labs etc (no toy breeds)

Anyway my daughter and I have started to home in on a) labs (neighbour has two beautiful labs) b) ESS (field) c) GSD or other shepherd. Might add that we very carefully considered one of the female Anatolian shepherds that appeared on CGN briefly but we dont have all the right circumstances for one to be happy with us. What are your views on Labs vs ESS, or even Doberman's vs GSD etc.
thanks

With John's permission, I will respond to this...

As a new dog owner... Of the breeds you are looking at, the Labrador Retriever is the most appropriate choice... it has the right demeanor and trainability for a new dog owner... Labs just love to please and are easily trained... all IMO.

I was so wrapped up in puppy love that I forgot to mention about the BH 89. Now that these folks are in full
production of these rifles, you should be able to source one through IRUN Guns , or Clay at Prophet River.
They are well made and sized to match the .500 S&W. You're probably lookin' at around $23-2500 to get one to your door from the looks of it.

Good luck on the search.:)

We enjoy the breed. A yellow lab will someday be joining our crew . That way we can have the three colours . It's interesting to see the gsp background come through when they stand point over a bird .
As you can see in our labs some have more English style and some have more America style . I'm typing this as I listen to 8 pups sucking for mommas milk

Say it isn't so...

You refer to what I've found to be the only, in my opinion, downside to a Lab. Our experience with our first, Tikka was she shed steadily, 24-7 from January to December. It's a downside I can live with though, easier than I can live without.

True:redface:, and no one more to blame for that sidetrack of discussion than yours truly. Further to that point, I have a recently acquired model 70 Winchester Super Express that I haven't burnt any powder in yet. Puppy duties.
I did inquire through Big Horn Armory and they led me to believe one could be acquired in the price range you've mentioned, with import and shipping arrangements through Prophet River. I've;) been a little busy as of late to allow me to pursue the acquisition of one. ;)Soon though.

I'm in the same boat as far as being too busy lately to get much shooting done, but Wed. will be the day
to try out my new Winchester 1873.:)

Clay's the man for the job fer sure. I've heard nothing but good comments about Prophet Rivers' service.

I did get some 'informal' indication of a 'to my door' price and it's looking like something close to $3,500.oo. I'd love to have one but:( that's a little rich for my liking.

Holy Crap! That's much too steep fer my tastes as well. I wonder if Ben Forkin is still doing conversions
to 1894 Marlins in .50 Action Express? His prices were much more reasonable. I would like to have a
Rossi M92 done up in .50 AE. It would be a very fun little thumper.:)

My range time has gone south for the moment. The 'Little Blond' is occupying much of my spare time.
