It depends on how dirty the range brass is. If its freshly picked up off the grass then no, I use my decapping head which has only a universal decamping die (no sizing so no fouling the die) to Deprime (just dump the range brass into the case feeder and pull away).
If the brass was pulled from mud/dirt or is very old, a quick wash in a bucket or a short spin in the stainless to get it to where it won't make a mess of my case feeder and then decap.
Next take the decapped brass to the stainless steel tumbler for a few hours for nice shiny and fully clean brass inside and out.
---
It's much easier with the universal decapping dies since only the pin goes through the case, nothing touches the dirty walls etc. Can stick dirty brass in there without any issues.
Just have to watch which brand of universal decapper you use, Lee has a flat shelf above the decapping pin and the case mouth can get hung up on it when rocking away at a full speed on a progressive. Dillon Universal Die is tapered so the case mouth rides up without any issues. Not sure on RCBS or Hornady etc.
Cheers!
