Reading the Lyman book on 357 magnums, why are some powders good for jacketed while others not? I'm going 158grain bullets, and ordered a mould just in case I get bored, wanted something universal.

Also ordered the 44 magnum dies and primers, 240 grain barrys bullets,

223 Remington hornady 22c fmjbt bullets

And since I'm already an arm and a leg into it I might as well reload 9mm Luger, I need to check if anything in the 357/38 family can be used with 9mm as well.

Usually it's because cast bullet loadings are reduced compared to jacketed loadings so the ideal powder is different. If you load up a cast bullet to too high of velocities you run into leading issues which are exasperated by hot burning powders(hence gas checks).

Either way you can generally just pick a middle of the road burn rate powder for a cartridge and make it work all around if you're not terribly fussy. And by that I mean unless you're shooting competition or looking to do something really specific you're never going to notice.

I can't suggest anything specific for you're chamberings as I don't shoot any of them but you can look at unique or universal for powders as they generally work across the board for a lot of cartridges.
