So, after I spent more than two years in Romania I am back. Before I left I sold my Russians SKS in mint condition. Saturnday I was having a horror time looking at some Russian SKS listed in the store for 700$ plus: beaten, rusted, steel discoloration, good to be sold just for parts. Where did they find this stuff in awfull condition??

All the Russian ones now that are available are the bottom of the barrel ones as you have seen
You can still get some minty Chinese ones but if you want a nice Russian one your gonna have to buy one off GP or the EE

Yup that's Canada now. Changed a lot in 2 years

Into Cabelas Saturday and decided to look at a Chinese SKS they had. Really good shape but $630 plus tax. Keep thinking of picking up a Chinese but with two Russians already do I really want another SKS. Didn’t see any Russian SKS on their racks.

The best "Deal" now that 'Holiday Sales' are past is at Tenda. The French Tickler models ONLY are 'UN-issued in Cosmoline for $579.99 plus your local tax. I got one last summer and the Chrome lined bore is like a mirror !
And GP is Gun-Post .ca , a localized online marketplace. I've seen some SKS still ca $500 w-NO Tax but you may have to pay $50-ish for shipping if not in your driving locale.

Yes, I put the dash in to 'defeat' the forum censor, and mis-typed com instead of ca - I just have a bookmark. I haven''t typed that in several years.

They found this stuff in awful condition in the same places they found the stuff in good condition years ago. Its just that they bought the good stuff years ago, and this crappy stuff is whats left.

Personally I'm not buying an SKS until the government changes. If The CPC reverses the OiC bans then SKS demand is going to plummet. If the CPC makes BIG moves and makes the AR15 or AK47 NR then SKS demand will plummet even further.

Ban can change the circumstance but unless there's a stockpile of .223/5.56 ammo sitting somewhere, .223 is still nearly $1/rnd unless you buy 1K and x39 is ca 35c.

Kinda hoping the CSA VZ-58s etc come back...but a 7.62x39 AR would be pretty sweet

The Chinese SKS are totally fine, in fact most of them are better shooters than the Russians. I just pop mine into a Russian stock for looks. My local gunshop has the same "fine collection" with high prices.

From my understanding the nicer ones we were getting came from cold war stockpiles in Ukraine that stored for decades which stopped coming our way when Russia started giving them trouble.
The more recent batches have been coming from russia, which have seen more use and less careful storage.

That could explain the Russian ones, but the quality of Chinese SKSs has largely dropped in the last 5+ years too - the recent batch of French Tickler ones aside most of the Chinese SKSs we are getting today are not as nice as the ones we got 8 years ago.

Also from what I can gather we banned the import of firearms from Russia back in 2014 when Russia invaded the first time, so I'm not so sure about SKSs coming from Russia?

Sanctions related to Russia were imposed under the Special Economic Measures Act in order to respond to the gravity of Russia’s violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and grave human rights violations that have been committed in Russia. On March 17, 2014, the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations (“the Regulations”) came into force.....

The Regulations also prohibit importing, purchasing, acquiring or shipping any and all Russian arms, ammunition and other weapons, including hunting knives and air rifles into Canada.....
