An easy mistake to make even at shorter ranges - especially when the deer is all by itself. There's no frame of reference - nothing to compare it to for size. It's a lot easier when they're part of a herd so you can just pick out the biggest and bang. Made that mistake more than once. Still it's good eating. I made a whole deer like that into sausage one year.
