This year it was tough to get motivated to get out and hunt. Bad winters, a reduction in the season and most of all the loss of a great friend made it tough. When I came to sask almost three decades ago he took me under his wing and schooled me on how to hunt this province. The number of hunting adventures would take another three decades to tell. He was the epitome of the gentleman hunter.
I went out for the muzzle loader opening day just to sit in the stand and have a bit of alone time. All I could think about was all of the memories and soon I found myself smiling. I had brought a pack of colt cigars with me as it was one of the things we often did was to enjoy a smoke after a successful day hunting. During the last few minutes of shooting time I think my friend sent me a gift. I got to enjoy a colt again.
