I suck with a pistol in general

Do you want to shoot fast while being dynamic or shoot bullseyes? Very different approach.

Bullseye: stance really matters. Keeping the gun stable and the sights aligned really matters. Being able to see your target then being able to focus back on the sights. Then execute the shot with a "surprise trigger break". Google that term. This is sorta similar to shooting a rifle.

Shooting fast and dynamic: your index (the ability to point the gun like it's a part of your body) must be developed. And you must learn to use your eyes to their full speed potential. The sights and the gun itself will move, it's up to you to see what you need to see as fast as possible, then rely on your grip and training to break the shot as fast and clean as possible. This is sort of similar to shooting trap.

If your groups suck at all distances, chances are you are scared of the gun and flinching. The surprise trigger break will help with this.

Find a good trainer, pay the good trainer. You can spend the money on wasted ammo, and frustration, or training - if you spend it on training, you'll be less frustrated and able to shoot at the end.

I will echo others here, there is no substitute for quality professional instruction, BUT, it is not mandatory to be a proficent pistol shooter.
Short of taking a course I would suggest the following;

Be sure that you are gripping the pistol correctly. Correctly being subjective, what works for others may not work for you but the general placement of hands on the grips and the proper pressure are key.

Dry fire, and do it lots. Place a spent case on your front sight and squeeze the trigger, does the case fall off? If so repeat until it doesn't and then keep repeating it.

Proper sight picture with front sight focus.

Log and document your range time. Start in close and work on good grip, trigger control and sight picture. Don't mag dump at the target but rather do strings of 2, 3, 5 etc. Take pics of your targets and compare them to the last time you were at the range.

Set goals for your self and increase your difficulty as you progress.

Don't get caught up in all the fancy range ninja, mag flipping, speed reloading sh!t. Slow is smooth and smooth is quick. If you really work on the fundmentals and really nail them down until you can't get them wrong then every thing else will come naturally.

Shooting a pistol well is not that hard and is certianly achievable but if you try to crawl before you can walk you're gonna have a bad time.

Also, what are you shooting? Wheel gun in 44mag, 22lr automatic? It would be a little helpful to know.

I can hit a target at 20 some meters, but, my groupings aren't good at all from any distance.
What can I do to actually improve when I'm at the range, instead of just wasting ammo?
Cheers

Have someone experienced take you shooting. It would be great if they also have pistols and/or revolvers in other calibers so you can get a range of experience. Also, if you have not considered it, I think air pistols are a great training device. I know others will say "train with the real thing", and while that's great, it's not always financially the best option. Even if the trigger weight is different, the fundamentals are the same. A blowback Co2 pistol helped me learn.

Well, there is your problem. Straws for sucking, guns for shooting. Rule of thumb, straws are unidirectional, guns are not.

Pistol Training dot com has a long list of drills, with downloadable targets. More than anything, we use a target called Dot Torture.

In your off time watch tactical hyve. Then practice with a air pistol preferably one that is the same as your real one. It saves on ammo and gives you more trigger time. I found it has helped alot. Good luck and keep shooting.
