I think I need a 17 HMR

I thought the same, then I purchased a 17Mach2 instead.Ammunition is half the cost, and it only gives up about 50 yards to the 17HMR.When the distances get longer,or the wind picks up,I switch to the 22 Hornet, which is far superior to the 17HMR at longer ranges, for larger game, and in the wind.I can also load the 22Hornet for about the same price as it costs to purchase 17HMR ammunition.

If I really had to have a 17HMR,and I was on a budget,I would go with a CZ.If my budget was larger,I would get another Cooper.

I run several, and have tried others, but my favorite is the Model 77/17VMBBZ Ruger. Typical flawless 9 round flush round mag, wicked accuracy, good looks, stainless...

Savage 93R17 with your scope de jour.(Thats French!!) I have the 93R17FV with a 4-12 on top. I will move up to a 6-24 possibly, and would have preferred a laminate stock over the composite one. BUT, the groups speak for themselves!! Yet to have a gopher ask for another pill!!
Cheers!!!

Not that you're asking, but I would go 22mag or 17Mach2 before another 17HMR. There is nothing wrong with them, I have killed multiple coyotes, and loads of gophers.... etc with a 17HMR. But I found the 22mag to handle coyotes noticably better, and the 17Mach2 to handle the little stuff just aswell at considerably lower cost. That said, I know where there is a accurate 17HMR CZ american for sale - from a guy thats easy to deal/trade with.... :)

In .17HMR you cant go wrong with any rifle since it is a very flat shooting round. I just personally have a preference to stainless Savages. I have a spiral fluted stainless Savage in a custom thumbhole stock with an elite 3200 5-15 on it. I had it out to 388 yards consistently hitting a 7 x 7 inch target. If anybody wants the vid I will forward it to them :p. So yes any HMR rifle is good, some are slightly better then others but in general they are all good.

X2 on the savage. If you have piles of money burning holes in your pockets i guess go for a ruger or CZ. Wont gain anything though. Better taking the extra money and spending it on 16 dollar/50 ammo.

I just bought a 93R17 FV, can't wait to get it. Just noticed Savage also makes the 93R17 TR which has a "Tactical" Stock and fluted barrel they also look sweet but I'm not sure how the price lines up with the FV.

There is a thread I started down the page, called What 17 HMR, same questions as you, same answers you'll get on this one. All in all for me the savage was the best one, others need trigger work and cost alot more from what I saw.

Savage 93R17 looks like it's ready to rock out of the box, comes with bases, add your rings and scope and go.

It might just be me, but the accutrigger on my 93r17 is amazing, its super accurate

I threw on a 6x24x50 scope and at 50 yards it shoots 1 holers 5 shots, 100 yards is under .500 moa and 150 yards 1moa

Sako Quad - I have all the barrels but if you want just one barrel the 17 HMR is pretty sweet. It shoots very well and if you decide you want an HBAR Varminter order the factory or Shilen barrel, pull out the channel liner and voila you now have a Varminter...

Having both a savage and a ruger, ya the ruger's more money, but is worth it. The five round savage mags are... well, nothing short of average. The magwell and general fit of the mag to rifle, or should I say lack of, is garbage. If all they give you is five rounds, you can expect to want quick changeouts. I have found several times that this is an issue. Just look at the mechanism... half arsed on the savage, excellent on the Ruger. And try as I might I can't get the savage to group as nicely. Don't get me wrong, I do like the looks and feel of the thumbhole stock and generally like savage rifles. I think it was about two hundred dollars difference between the two. I'd pay that to kill the critter I missed last year due to the crap feeding getup on the savage. Even though the Savage comes standard with the accutrigger, the Ruger I have still sits stock with no intention of changing it- is a bit heavy for some tastes (not mine), but very crisp.
Lots of people poo poo'd the hmr cuz 'for that money you can reload 223' yada yada. Sometimes you don't wanna pick up brass in the field, sometimes you don't want the noise. Sometimes your neighbors don't want the noise. I think no matter which rifle you get hmr's a great little round for its intended purpose... which in my opinion doesn't include coyotes unless a clean shot perhaps within 100yrds. I think I've said it before, seen several guys at the shop counters complaining it didn't do its job. Not sure the cartridge is the one to blame in such a situation. Squirrels, rabbits etc... devastating.

The 22Hornet is about as loud as the 17HMR,so noise isn't an issue with either. And the Hornet is suitable for coyotes out to 250 yards or so.
