Long story short, i recently found an inflatable deer decoy in an old trunk at my grandparents house that I purchased about 13 years ago and long since figured I had lost it. Unfortunately, whoever stuffed it in there didn’t realize that mothballs and hunting stuff don’t mix and it now reeks of mothballs. Is it now safe to say this decoy is as good as garbage or is there a way I can get the scent off it and continue to use it? Thanks for the replies fellas

Would be great as a 3d archery target... for the first shooter up.

Someone with more hunting experience will be along shortly to give a better answer.

Evanguy, that was actually my first thought, a 3D deer rifle target. Maybe call this one a loss and just get a new one

Clean with baking soda paste a few times might help but plastic holds scents like a son of a gun
Nothing to lose by trying this.
Put it in the bath tub or washing machine tub and hand wash it with soap & cold water, rinse and let it soak with a box of baking soda, cold water & some hyd peroxide.
Rinse, blow it up & put it out in the sun & see what happens.

The one I had never lost the smell of vinyl/plastic they are made of, so maybe mothballs is an improvement. Not a fan of these things.

Hang it somewhere it can air out for 6 months. That's what we did with 5 wool blankets that had a box of moth balls in with them.
It worked.

Anchor is in swamp water for a few days. I did that with an inflatable swimming tube for my toddler. 3 days no plastic smell and once inflated and hosed down and left in the sun there was no scent at all

Or sneak in the night before opener and set it up at the edge of range of your buddy's stand and wait to hear him shoot at it at first light lol

my daughter once brought home a free plastic Christmas tree for in her room, it came from a smokers house and stank badly.
We put it outside and sprayed it down with vinegar in a small spray bottle and the smell was completely gone after a few days outside.
Might be worth a try since vinegar is pretty cheap.

Some dude out in the yard lathering up his inflatable deer...that won't get him internet famous at all!

It’s a miss november. I put it outside on my open deck trailer a while ago and it’s been rained on and in the elements steadily. Will check on it soon to see if the smell is going away.

You could try borrowing an ozone machine and use it on low power. If im not mistaken you can unzip the fabric and deflate the deer and pull the fabric off can you not? Then throw the fabric into the wash with your hunting detergeant to get rid of the smell.
