I have always liked the 6.5x55. Enjoy shooting Swedish m38 and 96 guns and I have decided it's time for me to get a hunting rifle in 6.5x55.

I want a nice walnut stock and blued gun. Not interested in plastic/synthetic.

I know CZ makes one and it's one of the guns I'm considering but it doesn't seem like I have all that many options for factory made which is why I'm here to pick your brains.

Does anyone other than CZ chamber a blue/walnut gun in 6.5x55? I know sako has the bavarian which is nice but a bit more than I'd like to spend (Keep it around $1000). Are there any used sakos I should be looking for? I know nothing about huskies. People seem to regard them highly and I have no problem buying something used if it's in great shape and good quality. What husky models should I keep my eyes peeled for, if any, on the EE? Should I buy a used winchester or other quality gun (DON'T want to build one on a savage/rem) and have one built?

Let me know what your thoughts are please. I have way to much time on my hands reading stuff on the internet now. Being a teacher does have its perks :)

Thanks

6.5 x 55 sm

I know that there are Ruger 77's in this calibre, as I had one (and sold it).
Bolt action, blind mag, blued, wood furniture.
I don't know how common they are, or whether they still make them.
Not sure if they make them in a Number 1 (though I have seen a Number 1 in a 7 x 57).

Good luck in your quest.
John

I guarantee you that the m96 has taken more deer, elk, moose, and pigs than any production "hunting" rifle :) That's be my bet for a 6.5x55.

Agreed.

I'd suggest to the OP to wander over to the Trade Ex site and see what they have for offer.

Take a look at the old style 98 sporters on Tradex, a banner site sponsor. They will have what you are looking for.

If you really want something like a Winchester/Remington/Ruger/Savage you can buy a used one for a donor action, stock etc and have someone put a 6.5 barrel on it, chambered in 6.5x55.

If you want the same thing on a short action, look at the specs on the 260 Remington. They are almost identical in performance.

Remington, Ruger and Winchester, all made rifles chambered in 6.5x55. I haven't checked lately but I think, Ruger still does. The Savage, would be the option for a new rifle in your price range with a custom barrel.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I did check out tradex and they have lots in 6.5x55 but I do want to mount a scope on this rifle and the straight bolt handle on the CG63 won't really work for me there.

6.5x55mm

I've had a couple of sporter 96/38's in 6.5x55mm. And currently have a 1942 mfg Husqvarna M38 full wood [my only full military Swede at this point].

I've owned both a Ruger 77 MkII and Remington 700 Classic in 6.5x55mm. Both were blued actions/barrels with factory wood stocks. That Ruger was exceptionally accurate right out of the box. Kinda sad I sold it.

Currently, have a Tikka 695 stainless synthetic and a Winchester Model 70 featherweight [blued with wood factory f/w stock] in 6.5x55mm. These two I've settled on.

NAA.

A Remington 700 Classic chambered in 6.5x55 sits in my safe and has taken moose and caribou. Luv that rifle.

If you're not on a big hurry, I'd suggest you to try to define your needs or preference better, so you won't end up with a rifle you may not end up to "prefer". There are plenty of options showing up from time to time in the used fields, such as Sabatti, Parker-Hale, BSA, Voere, Sako, Tikka, Carl Gustav and Husqvarna 1900 (and all the clones), Husqvarna 1640, 640 (M/38 and or M/98) and 46B, Winchester, Remington, Ruger and on and on. If your desire is to get more (velocity) from your rifle, I would suggest you to don't go with a pre-98 Mauser action.

For the new rifles, the choice is a little bit narrowed, but there's still plenty of options for you. As others already said, Cz 550, Tikka, Sako, Voere, Howa, Zoli 1900 (HVA/CG 1900 clone), Zastava and most other European manufacturers make it.

I've got a ZKK 600 in 6.5x55

Predecessor to the CZ 550

Never shot it yet. In fact, it came from a private collection and has never been fired since it left the factory.

At 9 1/2 pounds with a scope it won't be going on my next hike-in alpine hunting trip either.
