I want an XCR.

Do: clean between the barrel and gas piston where it vents

Do: use a aerosol cleaner to blast crap from the breech out the muzzle

Do: clean muzzle break

Do: oil lightly

Dont: loose respect for the damage corrosive ammo can cause

Dont: freak out when you remove the barrel to clean it and then find out on your next range trip your optic is still bang on or at most one maybe two clicks out.

If you dont use corrosive ammo... 99% of the cleaning problem goes away, i do not use it no more... JP.

I used to own an xcr and I liked it. The only two things I didn't like we're that it's a bit muzzle heavy and that I needed to loc-tite things down. He info on loc-tite wasn't common knowledge back then. Otherwise I was very happy with it.

I've read about the heavy barrel complaint a few times now. are there aftermarket options available that give you a lighter option so it's not so cumbersome to carry around for a hunting rifle?

You could always remove your barrel and send it to someone who could flute or mill it. I've seen pictures floating around of XCR heavy barrels turned-down behind the gas block and fluted. You could also remove the flash hider to offset the forward weight.
You could buy yourself a 7.62X39 kit and drop about 4-5 ounces from the muzzle.

The muzzle-heavy problem with the XCR-L with 18.5" heavy barrel stems from the rear butt-stock IMHO.
It is wayy light and when you have our canadian laws forcing you to run a 18.5" pipe instead of the standard factory 16" light contour barrel you have a balance problem.
Lots of members have simply run AR style butt-stocks and added weight to the buffer tube. Almost any AR stock with NEA adapter will add half a pound over the factory one.

I run an ACOG and find it mounts far enough back to offset the weight slightly.

No you are stuck with the heavy. That is my only complaint as well, with a scope mag and ammo I am over 10lbs. Not a big deal for just the range but sucks a bit when I walk about a Km to the back of the property!

another question just came to mind. what is the availability of third party parts, to 'enhance' the rifle from factory? I'm not talking accessories, the rails pretty much mean anything can be attached. a lot of people by Norinco CQB's or M14's, spend some money to upgrade the guts and 'enhance' the rifle's abilities.

surely you can do the same with an XCR? I just haven't seen any XCR mod threads.

aside from some gunsmithing on the trigger all the internals function decently enough as is untill they break... diffrent system then the M14 with its oprod spring guide and more desirable for some then gas bolt M4 tekmology... apples to oranges some might say.

get the XCR spare parts kit and swap random pieces in and out from time to time if you feel you need to tinker with it.

so there aren't any aftermarket parts. interesting. while the rifle is accurate enough, I hear it has something to be desired still, so I would have thought someone would have come to the market. ah well. I will have mine soon enough!

I don't think the XCR has been around long enough for there to be after market internal parts yet. The M14 and the M4 have been around for a long time hence the reason there is so much after market parts for them.

with factory ammo yes... with handloads maybe not so much... its not a bolt gun but its not a SKS either.... understand its a chrome lined barrel and not a hand lapped kreiger... shoot it side by side with a VZ58 or RRA at 200M+ and you will raise an eyebrow.

Just my $0.02 but I think the reason you see the AR15 and M14 mods are because the parent military versions have been modded for better combat function, accuracy and reliability as this matters in the real world and this trickles down to the civvies owned versions.

You can upgrade your AR15 to look and perform close to a M4 or C7 albeit only in semi auto.

The M14 platform is a 1950s design battle rifle that has been resurrected by the U.S. military for uses such as a DMR and benefited from modern enhancements. The DMRs (Crazy Horse et al) are somewhat in vogue and the Norcs are are a good inexpensive non restricted platform to upgrade for function, accuracy and weight reduction. Out of the box they are fine as is given their lineage but again some folk want to get them closer to the real U.S. versions past and present.

XCRs are not military and according to many owners, pretty good right out of the box. Given time there probably will be similar threads for the XCR.

it's 3 years old already. sheesh!

XCR has more rail real estate than any rifle, you can bolt on just about every boat anchor and kitchen sink you can imagine, you have 3 differenrt caliber to pick from , the stock adaptors that will let you use every AR stock on the market.

Seriously, Just what are you really looking for?
