Has anybody got any experience with these damnfool things? So I assume you pop the wedge and the barrel off the gun, dump the cylinder and replace it with this thing and re-assemble?

And how does that work? The gun is a .44 round ball and can all of a sudden shoot .45? Just by swapping cylinders out? Can one of our forum scholars explain this to me before I make an impulse buy and blow myself up?

The .44 cal cap and ball revolvers use a ball .454-.457 in diameter so they are in effect .45 cal. My 1873 SAA clone uses bullets that are .452 and they also work in 1911's (.45 ACP).
If I were to get one of those conversion cylinders for an open top Colt !860 Repro I would reduce the charge even from the "cowboy" factory loads which I have found to be quite hot.
