These were at my shop today. Apparently going for scrap metal.
Its a shame they are in ok condition. Definitely restorable for rec use.

They have a 2 stoke 6v53 Detroit diesel. Pretty simple to get running :)

Yeah I was a little disappointed they are getting trashed. Id def buy one for a few grand.
 
We got the first M113s at the Armoured Corps school in Camp Borden in the summer of 1965. The RCAC School ran courses for the Infantry because this was a tracked vehicle. I got my first turn at the tiller bars at that time.

The M113 was an excellent vehicle from an automotive point of view and they served us well for some 46 years (I'm on the base in Edmonton this week doing some contract training work and saw one being driven in the LDSH(RC) compound today). They are on their way out though, being replaced by the LAV. They were thinly armored and were intended to be a "battle taxi", rather than a fighting vehicle, to move infantry quickly over shell swept ground.

I saw a number of Israeli M113s which had been knocked out in the Yom Kippur war of 1973. They were reamed out like a soup can and sure made you realize their limitations from a protection point of view. It would be very costly to keep a privately owned one going.

What would make it not so bad is, no schedule, doesnt have to be reliable.


Lots of detroit parts out there. But it would def be a hobby for sure.

And it could be greatly simplified for civvy use.

I remember getting the engines rebuilt on local contract in Calgary in 1971 when there was a shortage of spares due to the Vietnam war. These worked out OK.
Parts like final drives and track would be quite pricey. Having said that, folks manage to keep other maintenance "bears", like the ex-Brit FV432 APCs and the Ferret scout car, going. As you say, there is no consequence to having one deadlined while locating parts or saving up to buy them.;)
 
They could be. They are going to BC to be dealt with. Not just to a scrap yard.

Probably being upgraded to TLAV's. Involves cutting them in half and adding a section in the middle then upgrading the drive train, upgrading the armour, adding a 1m turret and a few other doo dads. Still a coffin on wheels regardless with minimal armour and a flat bottom.

Some of them already are. The Lynx C&R vehicles were disposed of in the mid-1990s and this was the destiny of many of them.

Actually they would be in considerable demand by Legion Branches for this purpose, and this would be a more fitting end for them than the cutting torch. Not much maintenance required in relation to a display aircraft-only some fresh paint from time to time.
 
These could make little go anywhere camps. Clear out the back, put in a small cot, kerosene heater, little propane stove, maybe even a chemical toilet, and some storage.

Wouldn't be comfortable or economical and would be very costly but sure as hell would get you in and out of some crazy places. No need to set up camp, just shut it down and your good.

Imagine pulling into hunting camp with one of these.
 
6V53 motors are used in the marine industry in BC...lots of parts and motors available from Southern California to Alaska.
