I want to "AI" my 527 7.62x39

OK so I'd like to "AI" my 7.62x39 CZ 527, any thoughts on using a 6mm PPC reamer to remove the body taper and steepen the shoulder? I'd like to avoid ordering a custom reamer again, just did that for my last wildcat and the wallet can only take so much. I started the think about it and this seemed like it could actually work well. I'd like to keep the start of the neck in the same place so I can simply chamber and fire brass cased 7.62x39 to fireform.

Neat idea - looks like it'd work, but you need to do some calculations on where the shoulders would overlap, and you might have to go in deeper than the 6mm PPC go-gauge suggests. You'd have to use a pilotted reamer with a 0.311" bushing of course.

what would you gain from this??I like the idea but how much speed would you get??Keep us posted on this!!

Longer case life (lapua brass, so it would be nice), and hopefully +200fps or a hair more, this would essentially be a ".30 Grendel", seeing as the Grendel hits 2400fps with 140gr 6.5's, the same and a hair more with 150gr .30's is a reasonable expectation I would think. . I only shoot handloads out of my 527 anyhow, so it's not much of a matter on the milsurp steel cased.

Right on, Andy, but this would not necessarily be a bad thing, would it?

The big problem, of course, would be to figure out a way to headspace the unformed brass in the longer chamber.

The .30PPC has been around for a while. Your idea should work fine.
As for not shooting steel cases, why not? The steel starts-off as a cylinder and is swaged down for the shoulder and neck, it'd blow-out just fine.

Just thinking more about that though... while the steel may well expand and fill out as desired, the lacquer may break up and fracture off in the chamber during the violent expansion... Not sure if it can keep up and expand with the case that much.

My guess (and it's only a guess) would be that it would work; but you might end-up with some cases that weren't perfectly symetrical because the extractor only holds one side of the rim down, so that when the pin hits it can #### the case to the side slightly.
These would all still be good, usable cases, it's just that your first real load would finish off the fireforming.

Would it be better to use a 6PPC reamer and drive it in a little more than standard depth or would a 6.5 Grendal reamer held a little short be better?

Well, another Q: If I'm fireforming with cream of wheat and bullseye, no bullet, can I get away with just running the 6PPC reamer in and then headspacing off the extractor for the "pop"?

That's exactly the way I form 9.3 brass from 30-06 brass, bulleyes, cornmeal topped off with bullet lube and hooked under the extractor...I finish fire forming with 16 grs of 2400 under a 269gr cast bullet...I just use 30-06 cases for lower pressure cast bullet loads in the 9.3...another little trick is that I put one turn of scotch tape just above the extractor groove to keep the case centered in the chamber...back to your 7.62 X39~~~
Make sure the 6PPC brass or loaded round feeds properly before you ream out to a AI...they should feed in your single stack mag. but they would'nt in my Interarms mini-mauser which has a regular mag.........:)
