I want to buy a m305, but am not fully convinced...

dont know if you browsed hard enough...

If an SKS is too heavy... start doing some exercise

-out of the box an M305 can be anywhere from 2moa-5moa
-plenty can be done to improve accuracy.. read the stickies
-basic rifle weighs about 3.5kg ( i use a proper measurement system, so i cant tell you in pounds )
-no putting a wood stock on it alone will not increase accuracy, you need to properly bed the action into the stock.
-cheek weld doesnt exist with optics on the M14 unless you use a riser to raise the comb.
-the barrel is a 1:12" twist so 168gr is about right.. dont go into the 170's or 180's range as you can damage the oprod and gas system.

Right out of the box, it will shoot better than 8" groups haha...I'm a horrible shot and I was getting 5" groups with Norinco ammo out of the box. There are seemingly ENDLESS ways to accurize the Norcs, trust me! Just went through a 1 day clinic with one of the bosses of the m14 and variants. Yeah, he accurizes like a boss.

Google the weight, it's about 9lbs out of the box. Not sure about the wood stock. Cheek weld kind of sucks (I have a 42mm objective and low rings, and needs 1.5" riser to get a comfortable weld). As far as ammo is concerned, I believe you'll have to get it headspaced to verify. You want 168.3 if I remember correctly...someone will chime in if I'm wrong.

What level of precision can be expected from a norinco m305 shorty out of the box?

Out of the box? Almost certainly groups half the size of your SKS. Maybe better. Maybe lots better.

What can be done to improve the accuracy of the rifle?

A great deal, relatively inexpensively. About $50 for a new op rod spring and op rod spring guide, $5 to Hungry for some shims if your gas system isn't tight. That's a decent start.

How much does the basic rifle weigh?

According to my fish scale my shorty in the original plastic stock weighs 9.5 lbs and my shorty in a wooden stock weighs 9.3 lbs. That's unloaded and I don't have optics on either one.

Would putting a wood stock on the rifle improve accuracy?

Nope, but it sure looks nice and might make it a little lighter.

When optics are mounted how is the cheek weld?

Can't answer that from personal experience, but most photos I see of scoped M305s have a cheek riser attached to the stock.

What are the tolerances as far as ammo is concerned? anything it doesn't feed (well)?

Mine have fed everything I've thrown at them with perfect reliability. If you're feeling extra cautious you could have your headspace checked before shooting reloaded brass.

Question 1
Accuracy will be like a 12 gauge shotgun with 000 buck magnums. Out of the box there are not the most rifle but with some local help (wink wink) it can preform very good. Mine after accurizing with my eyes will get an average of 5 in with irons using Nork ammo.
Question 2
Some of the main improvements to it will be a spring guild op-rod, unitize the gas system, bedding the action and the most difficult, truing the barrel to the action. The last one will take some help in the form of an action wrench and barrel vise.
Question 3
App 9 lbs out of the box.
Question 4
Not sure it would do anything but mine does ok with one.
Question 5
Mounting optics, a check riser will be needed. Luckily there are a couple of guys make them for around $50 + shipping. Or you could be a cheapo like me and just make your own, it's not that hard.
Question 6
This rifle was designed for 168gr bullets or lighter but have been told but some in the biz that 180's wont kill it unless it's a stead diet of them. Mine does have a FTF every now and then but it's not often.

I need convincing to buy a m305...

Don't hurt yourself weighing the pros and cons, trying an M305 is pretty painless. If you decide it's not for you the demand is high enough that you could easily flip it on the EE for a decent price and move on to something else.

Its a very hungry rifle. If you need to sell your SKS to fund the purchase of a $400 rifle, perhaps you should stop to consider how much 308 ammo costs. If your just looking for a plinker, the SKS is hard to beat. (not trying to tell you how to spend your hard earned money)

Out of the box the M14 isn't that much more accurate than the sks. Where the M14 really shines is in the aftermarket parts. You can make these rifles fairly accurate for a Semi-auto, but be prepared to spend 2g's by the time your all said and done.

I dont NEED to sell my sks to supplement the purchase I have no more room in my safe and the sks just happens to be the rifle that im willing to part with.

So what I understand is if I bought a m14 I'd have to go to a seminar (not opposed to this)
I'd be buying the wood stock from Boyd's and bedding the action and unitizing the (gas system?) and changing the op rod guide and spring?
All of this would make more accurate rifle?

Yup, you got it! I highly recommend the m14 clinics that 45ACPKING or Hungry put on. It was a lot of fun, met a bunch of great people and learned TONS! And now my m14 shoots much, much better! :D

Try shooting it first, it might surprise you. Definitely go to a clinic though if you get the chance, it's like a crash course in "all about your M-14".

Well how about it anyone in the LML region that frequents the
PCDFHC care to let me try their rifle? Could be a timmies gift card in it for ya!

I will be up at the PCDFHC in a few weeks with mine. Just did 45ACPKING's clinic and ordered some new rear sights, don't want to sight in again until the new sights come in. likely first week in Oct. Ping me then and we can set something up.
