I want to get a 12ga semi

I've been reading for hours the different opinions and suggestions of the many people here on this site to find the perfect 12ga. semi. I do not have any local gun shops where I can pick up a gun so online is about the only option I have.

I will be using this gun mostly for small game like partridge and snowshoe hare. I will probably use it for comerans too and to a lesser extent clay shooting. I might even try geese and duck hunting later when my son gets older.

I was really interested in a used Benelli super black eagle I that I found online but after talking to some local guys here they tell me that I should get a Browning auto5. They say the difference is night and day. They tell me with the Benelli its not as stable after shooting so you have to completely re-aim and you lose that extra second or two on the second shot. They also say that the recoil spring rusts out and requires continuous maintenance because we live and hunt near salt water. They also say I'll save many dollars over the Benelli and parts for Brownings are very easy to get and are cheap. I would go with a Browning auto5 in a flash but the problem is I find them ugly as hell. The Benelli is a beautiful gun IMO. Now I did find a thread that says that Browning with come out next spring with a new gun based on the auto5 and that gun looks really nice. I want to wait for that, I think, because this gun will become my friend for a very long time so I want a gun that I will appeal to me in all areas. Any one have any other guns that I should look at?

I agree with the browning part but not an auto 5. I have browning gold (s)and a maxus all which have worked very well for me for many years from clays to geese.
 
I've got an auto5 and love it but can't shoot it to save my life. I find myself always staring at the back of the receiver. I've never hunted in salty areas so I can't comment any further

The local guys are deranged. The Benelli is a superior shotgun is every respect. Fewer parts, more durable, easy to disassemble and you don't have to fiddle with a friction ring for loads of different power. And as you've surmised the Auto 5 is butt fugly with the added joy of handling like a sow on a snow shovel.

I have always wanted a semi I guess for no particular reason accept that I have a pump and would like a semi. An over under just doesn't appeal to me I guess. They look big and heavy and if I'm walking in the woods I think a semi would be lighter I think.

I guess bottom line is I just want a semi.


Thanks for all the responses guys but I'm still confused as ever over what to get.

Are you fixed on the SBE? Do you think you will need 3-1/2" shells? If not the Benelli M2 might be one to consider. I've found 3" shells more than enough for waterfowling and the M2 will be a little better with lighter loads.

As the gun will be used mostly for small game and some clay shooting I'd also suggest the Beretta Xplor/391, Browning Gold or Winchester SX3. These are gas-operated guns, better with light and heavy loads and have less recoil.

No I'm not suck on the SBE. I've kinda got my sights on the new Browning thats going to be released this spring but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks for those suggestions I'll research them out and see what they look like and perform.
 
there was a time when the arguement about a shotgun began and ended with one- the remington 1100- in it's heyday, that shotgun could do it all, migratory, trap and skeet, upland, whatever- it was only the legislation of going to steel shot that caused it's demise, and the cost of manufacturing-the 11-87 is close , but still doesn't have the "feel" of the 1100- however, since we're not back then and the 1100 series have cheapened over the years, it's best to go with either the benelli or maybe a beretta 390 series- they're both good guns and i ended up putting the 390 on my "should have " list after the registry ends
 
Semi -auto

I cant speak for Browning auto shotguns ...I've never shot or owned one

I've had many pumps over the years ...mostly Remingtons 870

I've also had opportunity to fire several other semi -auto's

I finally just settled this year and purchased a new Benelli M2
AWESOME ...
feels good in my hands
nice and light
easier to swing
fast follow up shots
easy take down and cleaning

My suggestion if you dont need the 3 1/2 '' shotshells of the SBE 2 go M2
with 26'' barrel

i have a remington versa max and love it, shot after shot i dont get off target at all theyve done really well with them and the recoil reduction and it is super consistant with every load going through it.

Only one issue I know of 1st hand. If you ever decide to sell it a 3 1/2" holds it's value more than a 3" and sells much quicker.
I would never buy a semi not 3 1/2 for that reason only.
 
you want a work horse that you can throw in the mud dunk it in freezeing water a bakail would be a choice. i have a win 2400 semi works great, but a nice shotgun is the win sx3 if i had the extra cash that would be my option. but when it comes down to it try out different guns see how they feel walking and shouldering leafve your options open to everything not just one gun.
 
First off,Tracidie isn't THAT far from Macadam NB,the Gun Dealer is the largest firearm store in the Atlantic Provinces. Id check their web site(actually I do) everyday in the used section,some very nice,new in box guns show up there.

Secondly,if you were to handel and shoot an O/U like my Franchi Rennasaince,thats has an alloy reciever and in 12ga weighs about 6 lbs,you might reconsider. Ive got nothing against auto loaders,in fact I own a very nice 1966 Remington 1100 skeet,has beautiful wood and is a nice shotgun,but I rarely use it cause I like double barrels better. Two barrels,two different chokes,great for clays and hunting. The third shot in any shotgun is only a ruse by the ammo manufactures.

Thirdly,check out the Yildiz line,so far Im impressed with this Turkish manufactuer. My next double is going to be a Yildiz Elegant SxS in 20 ga.
 
The A-5 was a great gun and still is but not very versatile unless you find a later one with chokes on it. The Benelli is years ahead in terms of technology and usefullness. Not sure why you think you need a gun like that for grouse but to each his own.
