I have no idea where to start though, I know no one personally that does it. I currently reside in Edmonton.

I do have my RPAL.

My 0.02, from someone who has tried to get into action shooting for over a year, and is still struggling with finding the necessary instruction and time.

How much handgun shooting have you done? Can you consistently hit a regular sized piece of paper at 10 yards? If no, then practice that a bit more.

Practice shooting not only slowly with both hands, but in pairs of shots, and also single hand, both strong and weak.

When you've done a bit of this, you need to find a course where rules and safety are taught, and the get some supervised practice with all the skill and safety issue that separate action shooting from target shooting.

Finding a course may be your biggest challenge. They will usually tie up an entire weekend or two separate whole day sessions.

It's not really that hard to pass the black badge test if you do a bit of practising on your own time and some dry firing.

Then you have to find a club that actually has IPSC activity on a regular basis so you can actually practice and do matches etc. If you have easy access to this, then all of the steps above can be done relatively quickly.

I just finished up the Black Badge myself. The biggest preparation you can do before taking the course is to work on regular marksmanship. You can look up the standard IPSC grip and stance online or on YouTube (leaving some room for correction by your particular instructor). If you are already a fair shooter then you can then concentrate on the other parts of IPSC like strategy, movement, reloading drills and the games. The course can help you become an even better shooter but it's better to start off from as high a platform as you can.

If you are a mediocre shooter like me then you may become a fair shooter by the end of the course after correction from the instructor :)

Look up "Black Badge" or IPSC in your area and I'm sure you'll come up with the names of various instructors or the active clubs.

Pheonix gun range on the Southside does it about once a month. The gear required and cost along with scheduling is on thier website. Check it out.

Does anyone else give Black Badge courses?

Haven't seen anyone else in Edmonton offer it. Most of the ipsc league stuff seems to happen at phoenix every saturday. Most the qualifiers that happen around Edmonton seem to happen at spruce grove. If you want to drive there are sometimes bb courses put on in other cities but they are two day courses. Don't take my word for it all as im just trying to get into it myself. Looking at taking the bb as soon as my gun arrives. Check out the action forum on here and the alberta ipsc site
