My dad just bought one and im now in the market I would like a baker rifle, can you buy modern UK built replicas or are they all made in india? what is the quality of the Indian made ones?

Is there any good black powder clubs in the Edmonton area?

Lots of variety out there - Marstar has a few Italian made; and buying flintlock LONG guns from the good ole' US of A is no problem whatsoever - Track of the Wolf, Dixie Gun Works, Sitting Fox (one I recently learned of here) and a number of other sites are suggested for you.

The Lyman Great Plains rifle, still available at WSS, is a really fine rifle for the money.

Good luck and happy shootin'

(Sorry can't help you on the club side.)

I love the Flinters. Take a look at the Pedersoli line up . Not cheap but the 3 Pedersoli's I have are very well made. They are all PC's though. Most fail to fire and slow ignition problems are solved by using real Black powder, real knapped flints, & 4F pan powder and proper flint placement in the Jaws.

Suplies in Edmonton are scarce, so stock up on flints, and powder. Cabellas has Goex Black powder. You will need to order in flints to get them at a reasonable cost, or go to some shoots and look for vendors selling Black Powder and Flints.
If you get an odd caliber other than 50 cal even Round balls can be hard to find . I ended up buying moulds, and scrounging lead.

A baker rifle could be had for a reasonable price from the india made delaers but those guns will require some lock work and i restained the wood on mine.

However the india guns arent rifled but you can get a rifled barrel if you deal with this dealer. The cost would be around 730.00 plus taxes ad shipping for the gun, new barrel, and bayonet.

The other option is building a kit from the rifle shoppe for around 1500 bucks.

id stay away from indian made stuff its a 50/50 chance with the barrel and breech plug fit i think my hands face and eyes are worth more then a $300 made in india musket or rifle that was most likely imported without a touch hole drilled and the locks are not good people who say different have had one that work has been done to it or got lucky. they use what ever they can find scrap over there id not trust them

id look for a pedersoli or north american made gun for some thing like a baker its a build your own game but it wont have a chance of blowing up if built right

Have you ever owned one ? I know several people who do including myself and they are good guns once you touch them up and give them a good inspection.

I also said in my post that if you want a baker rifle military heritage can set you up with a guy in the states who will make you a new rifled barrel for it.

Then I would reccomend restaining and sanding the wood, then polishing all the metal. The lock would most likely need to have the frizzen hardened. Also the mainspring will most likely have to be lightened.

Overall for the money they are a good price, the barrels can be an issue but not if you go with the new rifled one.

I have a brown bess and its a great gun, a little rough on cosmetics.

You will find that people who say these guns blow up all the time dont own them havent owned them and are generally not informed as to the subject at hand. That being said I would double check the breech plugs and tune the locks.

Cheers, McLean

after seeing pics of more then one with a bad fitting breech plug id not trust it and after lock work, stock work and a new barrel mite as well invest in a good kit and finish it it may cost more but i know i'll have all my body parts and wil have something to be proud of

Contact The Edmonton House Brigade for information on fur trade era guns, activities, traditions, etc. They sponsor a great weekend of BP shooting at the Sherwood Park club range and this year it will be May 25, 26. Before spending your hard earned $$ you should attend this gathering for a day and talk to the guys and gals who use all these different guns, learn how they perform and then decide what is for you. See you there. There will be a similar shoot at the Camrose range April 20, 21 as well. PM me if you need more info.
P.S.: The Alberta Black Powder Association will have their new web site operational in a couple of weeks and there will be lots of info there too.
