I wish new .222 guns were more common

I have three .222 rifles at the moment, and no .223's. I think the only reason the .223 is more popular is that it is a military chambering, not because it is better! Used ones are quite available. I also suggest you look for a used Sako. Wonderful rifles and worth the price. You could re-barrel a Remington and get it to shoot OK, but then you'd be paying as much as a Sako and you'd still have a Remington...

I've been thinking about a coyote rifle, and decided that my first choice of chambering would be in .222 Remington. I have a bit of a soft spot for that cartridge...
Me too - used a M600 Mohawk on chucks alot when I was young. This is my walking coyote gun these days - in triple deuce. Made for export where 223 is verboten. I think it shoots more accurately than yer average Mini chambered for that other evil cartridge. I noticed one sold heartbeat quick last month at Epps - a rarity I suppose in 222.

New is nice but don't discount the old classics. Watch for a used Remington 788. Was their economy line up until the mid 80's. Legend has it they discontinued them for out shooting the more expensive 700 line. Not the prettiest guns out there but I've never seen a coyote drop dead due to the breathtaking beauty of a rifle stock.

I have 788 in 222, a first year production with a walnut stock, be happy to let it go to a new home. It hasn't been fired much in the last 20 years. FS

^Uberkermit! You best jump on this offer with cash/EMT burning through your lucky hands.
The walnut stocked 788 was only offered in the first year of production (1967??) IIRC, the rest are birch wood stocked from the factory. Mine and many others are Uber accurate.
Once shot a coyote @200 yards through the eyeball! Okay, I was holding for the back of his head while he was running away from us on the Saskatchewan prairie after he winded us. Me the shooter and the caller. He broke up through the valley where I knew it to be that distance and he made the fatal mistake of looking back over his shoulder towards us as the trigger broke. I don't know about yourself, but I get a warm&fuzzy knowing that this situation was a single fatal headshot, regardless how things panned out. :)
Shots like that come about once in a lifetime, and are only possible with accurate cartridges such as the .222 Remington, chambered in the pedestrian looking but well regarded Model 788.

Cheers and good hunting!

My old Savage 340 in 222 was a great lil gun, I never found a load that DIDNT shoot great, 40-55 bullets with a moderate charge almost always would shoot 1/2" groups at 100, it made me look like I actually knew what I was doing :)

I have a Stevens 200 in 223 that I keep wanting to make into a triple duece, but the problem is it shoots so damn good I cant justify it.

Will have a 222 in my safe again one day forsure.
