I Wish They Made Something Like This

As folks know, the options for non restricted back packing guns are pretty limited. Unfortunately most of the options are either rimfire or shotgun calibers. The options for centerfire chambered guns are very limited.

I have relied on a "Armed" 13'' folding 12 gauge in the bush for a while. Honestly the simple folding guns are pretty hard to beat.In my opinion the single shot part really isn't an issue in the bush. Super reliable and simple. Makes a great option when you only have room for one compact firearm.

Now what I really want is something like an "Armed" shotgun or a little badger except chambered in something better like .357 Mag or .44 Mag. I guess if I came up with a wish list for what i want in a firearm it would be something like this:

-As compact as it can legally be made.
- Most likely a single shot folding design similiar to a little badger or backpacking shotgun
- Chambered in a awesome bush caliber like .44mag
- Decent quality (not a Chiappa- sorry)
-Decent usable sights that actually allow for reasonable target shooting. I like to actually shoot the guns I pack around.
- Okay trigger. That kind of goes without saying I guess.

Anybody else wish this gun existed?

I have a Model 600 Remington action. And a couple of XP100 barrels. One in .221FB, the other in 7mmBR.
Could make up a really compact barrelled action in either the original calibers or in .223 or 7mm-08.
Set it up with a folding stock, keeping it over 26" overall.
Very compact, significant power, accurate.

Maybe consider the JR Carbine. Available in 45 ACP, 40 S&W and 9mm, and as a takedown. Mine's a 9mm.

Yeah the blowback guns are cool. Unfortunately none of those calibers compare to a .44 mag. Also the takedown feature is really only good for storage and transport as it takes too long to assemble for use. A folding gun just snaps into action.

I realize many of those guns can be reliable, but there is no way I would trust a blowback action in harsh environments.

That would make a sweet little unit for sure. Unfortunately the storage length would be twice what a folding gun is.

Maybe consider the H&R Survivor .45 Colt/.410. Takes < 10 seconds to assemble. Handloaded mine fires a 300gr bullet at 1400 fps.

Now that's getting close. I had seen a H&R Handi Rifle in 500 S&W before and it looked like a handy little unit. Something like that in .44 Mag would be alright.

.45 Long Colt handloaded in a strong action is about equal to a .44 Magnum, 240gr bullet at ~1700 fps, or a 300gr bullet at 1400 fps. Plus the 45 is a wider bullet, .452 vs. 429. But the 500 S&W takes stopping power to the next level.

I have a 500 handi, would be awesome if you could pop the forend off and remove the barrel without tools like an o/u shotgun. Think a lot of European kiplauffs are like this. Had a 243 brno k1 fullstock single shot think it had a 16 inch barrel, no take down feature though. Man do I ever regret selling that one

You can make a handi rifle into a tool free takedown fairly easily, I believe Hoytcanon has done a few? Maybe he can chime in.

The Handi Rifle is definitely on the right track. Still needs to fold though. Takedown isn't what its cracked up to be. Big difference between having the pieces in your hand and having the gun folded in your hand.

Look at it this way and the example I am going to use is what our Men and Women who go outside the wire on Patrol utilize.
They carry the gun , they do not stow it disassembled in their packs to be used when they make contact.

The anology is this , they are hiking outside the safety of the base.
Just sling your choice of firearm and be ready for when Booboo decides he wants yer pik- ah-nik baskit .

Beretta CX Storm, locked and loaded with a carry sling worked fine for moi.

Tight Groups and Happy Hiking,
Rob
