I wonder if every hunter is supposed to be good at skinning game.

guys go easy on him. He's just a new hunter.

Try and find someone to teach you first. The hunter ed book lists someways to skin an animal I believe.

If you cant find anyone to teach you then just read up on it. Skinning the animal is a way of thanking it and making sure your not just a thrill killer as someone else suggested.

to be a killer you need to be unremoursefull (however the hell you spell it)
its hard for many her to relise that some people come from non hunting back grounds, were most of us its bread into the genes , hell my kids first kill he painted himself in blood just to prove he was in it

its just blood and guts bud it wont harm you (may make you puke if your not used to the smells but hey most get over it)

p226 just go to the library or chapters and looks for books on skinning animals, if you cant find any ask the nearest attendent t o order you books on how to skin dead animals.
skinning itself is not dificult especialy if your a meat hunter and not worried about a trophyslice up the belly down the legs pulll the guts rip the wind pipe and start peeling the skin off if your going after big game it helps to hang it nose up by a rope. like it has been suggested try and find a mentor to show you the ropes on 1 or 2 anmd that way you know how to do it yourself.

shut up:mad: ,nothing to do with pussy,I dare kill anything but just have some cleanliness.

You have to understand P226, hunters as a group, hate poachers and irresponsible shooters who waste game, creating a bad image and closing off private land for the rest of us.

I am not saying you are one of those types, but your post made it look that way and raised some hackles.

Definitely best to go out with someone who knows what they're doing and will show you, or at least be very patient with you while guiding you through it.

I was pretty worried (ie, terrified) about cleaning my first deer. Never saw it done b/f and didn't have a clue how I'd react. Thankfully, my uncle was there to help. He cut it open and told me to cut/scoop everything out  (heart, lungs, liver). I just reached in and went to work...completely natural and didn't bother me at all. (Actually, it felt really good cuz my hands were freezing.) ;)

My only other suggestion would be to watch a video of it rather than using pictures and text. I guess this doesn't help much but experience is the best teacher. Maybe I'm a slow learner  but I dressed 6 deer b/f I even had the hang of it.

Bahahah - smart ass!

Hey 226, PM me if you're in Ontario and I'll see what I can do about giving you a crash course first hand...we'll do a couple of rabbits - bigger game is easier, as you can be a little sloppier with the knife work.

You sure wanna be clean about it, your gonna eat it right?
Get with a hunter for your first few kills, your gonna need it. I can see it now, the knife open's the ponch , and it drains inside, and I won't even mention the bladder :D Skinning comes later , under controled conditions at home, or at a butcher shop(that handles game meat). ;) Folks are gonna #### on your comments, suck it up :D

thanks to all posters(including the guys who teased me:p ) for giving such treasure suggestions. I learned a lot here! as i said and you all knew, I have to admit I am not really a hunter(at least till now I have not killed and skinned anything, even just tested fire last week.) I got lots of things to learn(it seems it's long way to go for me:redface: ) sorry to have given hunters here so bad impression.

well now your getting your first lesson here...learn to talk back when you know what your talking of;) ..i would highly encourage you to take the offers to help you to clean out some game...pm these guys to pursue the offers..your getting a break here to teach you some tricks...that most of us had to learn the hard way..
were ya from?maybe if i see your willing to learn.. i,ll get you out on a hunt;)

Gutting and cleaning is often a little intimidating to new hunters. I get asked a lot about it when i'm talking to folks just getting into the game as young adults (vs those of us who grew up with it).

Nothing to feel bad about - you just gotta find someone who'll show you and get in there and do it. Yeah - everyone's a little nervous about nicking a gut, or has visions of being covered head to toe in blood like some vampire movie :) But you'll find it's no big deal. Your imagination is likely far worse than the reality.

You'll get over being squeamish REAL fast :) just get in there with both hands and have at 'er.

First buck I got with my recurve , I remember the older :D fella that was with me said, give me your knife , I did. He wanted the knife so I would not stick him, . He grabbed up the liver , and caught me across the face , both sides before I could retreat:rolleyes: :D All part of the tradition  ;)

This is the hunter's badge of glory:That he protects and tends his quarry,Hunts with honor, as is due,And through the beast to God is true.
... and taking care of game after the shot is part of it.
