ICFRA target. Realistic expectations?

Just looking to get an idea what I should be striving for score wise with the .4MOA target as opposed to the "old" 1MOA-Vbull DCRA target.

First shoot of the season today so we used the DCRA target to get our zeros and use up some old faces and I shot a 150/26(300,500,600y). The V's were all tight, about .4-.5MOA group, two of the 5's were marked flyer brass (and now culled) and the other 2 were missed wind changes. First time to 500,600 with the new barrel so I used JBM to calculate my elevation and it was DEAD ON. I was pretty impressed at how accurate it was.

Would it be reasonable to expect a 145/15 or better? Where can I find some match results pages from 300,500,600y using the ICFRA target to compare? If the more experienced here wanted to look at my plot sheets (upload and email) and see any trends, places for improvements etc.. it would be appreciated.

Cheers!

At Kamloops, the 0.4/0.8 MOA V and 5 ring are shot at 300m. I believe the 500m is 1/2 and 1 moa or damn close.

Scores really depend on the winds, your ability to shoot and accuracy of your rifle. At 300m, under ideal conditions a perfect 15V have been shot a few times. Most try for a clean 75 with high V count (15rds)

At 500m, 75 and high V counts can be had.

Really depends on how badly the winds are howling.

There are days when hitting a 3 is cause for celebration.

I have my issues with the ICFRA target, mostly its lack of a contrasting center. When shooting squadded like you are at most matches, the target rapidly obliterates and you need the centers replaced often. 3 guys with 17 rounds each on one target chews it up pretty good. Patches obliterate the lines and I feel this impacts proper scoring. I would like the center to be all white.

The fact it does not correspond with scope adjustments is a pain too. It is particularly frustrating because the ICFRA target is for international competition, and nobody shoots 300M in international ICFRA matches, so I am a bit pyssed that an international committee has imposed this standard on club level matches, although i do recognize that clubs are free to use what they want. FWIW, this is the size it is because instead of giving us .5MOA on the short range target, they simply put a half-sized center on the TR target. Their V-Bull is our 5 ring.

I like the DCRA target better, but whatever.... as for potential accuracy, There are several shooters that regularly shoot clean with high V-Counts. CyaN1de, Shockman, and I have all had perfect scores (75-15V) in matches on this target.

This is a target from the KTSA winter league shot at 300M for the first time on the new ICFRA targets. The BCRA was the first PRA in Canada to use them, and we started adopting them at the club level too.

Richard and I both shot clean targets the very first time we shot them. This is Cyan1de's 1st 300M ICFRA target:

6mmBR, Remington XR100, Krieger Barrel. Can't remember if he used 107 Sierras or 105 Bergers

It was more of a question of mindset I guess. Seeing a lower score on the score-card kind of plays with your mind when you are used to seeing something else, yet in reality you may have done better than in the past. I don't know, maybe it's just me...

I believe I would be able to shoot clean on it as most of the time last year it was 50-8 or 9 with only one 50-10. This year with a new barrel that shows MUCH more promise than the factory Savage barrel I used last year, I feel I should be able to cleanly shoot the 300y target with decent V count, hopefully around 20% of the time while the other 80% would likely be a 48-49. (Going from last years results)

You raise some very valid points with the scoring rings as they will be obliterated in a short period of time (hopefully anyway...) I also find it difficult to be able to confidently shoot with a hold-off, after the center has been shot out and is filled with black patches. It seems to negate any benefit a high mag scope gives you, when you can't 100% distinguish where the scoring lines actually are. I was partial to the DCRA target as well, but something had to change as equipment evolves and scores keep getting higher. There were a couple people that said we should have kept the same target but counted V's as 6's and I was on the fence at the time, but the more I think about it, the more I can agree with it.

Smaller targets lead to lesser scores. It's all relative.

Try to shoot the highest score you can and likely your STANDINGS will stay similar to last year if you are shooting with the same level of skill.

I am shooting in FTR this season and WOW, my practise scores have plummeted as the amount my shots get buffeted around have dramatically increased vs my 6.5 F Open rig.

Where I would have no worry about hitting an outside 5, I now have to keep from shooting an inside 4 or worse. It will certainly improve my ability to judge winds and be more aggressive in my adjustments.

AND learning how to shoot with a bipod vs a pedestal rest has been challenging. It is definitely different set up.

chatting with a very experience F TR shooter, he reinforced what I intuitively knew. The task has changed, the scores will change, as long as your score is comparatively higher then your competitions, who cares what the number actually is.

Sage words indeed.....

TR shooters could basically care less about obliterating the V-Bull. It is another thing for a FTR shooter to lose his point of aim. I lost a point recently by not asking for a new wear centre. Don't hesitate to ask for a clean target face when target pasters have covered the scoring rings.

Grinch is bang on. Get the center replaced as often as needed. It sucks when you are squadded wth a slow shooter because you have to have the target fixed within the overall time limit.

Well, first time out with the new target and I shoot the 300 clean, 50-5. Later on through the day when I did my 500, conditions changed and I had a hard time reading it, especially the really thick mirage so I dropped a couple there. Then at 600 the mirage changed, wind changed direction and speed and it started to get sunny, sounds like a lot of excuses but I found it hard to keep up with it. I would rather it be blowing 10mph then be calm and overcast. I can't seem to see the really subtle changes when it's "too calm"

All in all, I think things went fairly well for the first time on the new target and now I have to start working towards a clean day of 150-XX.

Also, I was wondering what you guys use for shot markers at 300? The markers we used for the old DCRA target are too large to get an accurate view of where you shot actually is in the V or 5.

We use 3/4" Fluorescent Red/Orange circles from office supply store at 300 and 500m...anything larger on the 300m target is just too big.

1" or 2" discs can easily be used at 500m since there is more realestate between rings.

I got it wrong, it's not the ICFRA target but the .5MOA DCRA target. They are close but different, apparently....But yes, 50-5 on the new .5MOA target

Agreed! Also, the .4MOA ICFRA dimensions only affect the 300 and 400 targets. 500 is often shot on a 600 target so it tends to be generous.

Thanks, I was pretty happy with it for sure. Hopefully it can be repeated many times :)

I do need to do a little load tweaking for my 500 and 600 to get some of the vertical out, but overall I'm pleased with how things are going early on.

You are correct on the 400m

If a 400 yard or 400 metre target is required, the 300 yard or 300 metre target (as appropriate) may be used, with aiming mark and rings increased proportionally - i.e. x4/3 in diameter.

but 500 and 600m both have their own dimensions/faces.

500m V = 72mm
600m V = 80mm

I have drawn most of the DCRA and ICFRA plot sheets. MOA is MOA and you can transfer one to another with a pencil to give a quick comparison. I can give anyone pdfs of these if asked.

I have a set of the ICFRA dimension plot sheets (for F-Class) including 1/4 min hash lines.

Mine are closeups of the target centers rather than full target faces.

Here is an example, they print 2 to a page but this is one of the plots.

EDIT: This is 1/8min hash marks
