I was wondering if any of our gunsmiths on here, or any of our members could point me in the direction of a smith that would build a switch barrel rifle for me. I've got a SS Model 70 classic in 300 wsm, I'd like to be able to switch to a 270, 300, and 325 WSM barrel. Can anybody give me any direction?

Thanks in advance

get a savage . very easy to change barrels on a savage.

I have a few switch barrel rifles, and just for info's sake, it's much easier to do on a push feed action. FWIW - dan

But it can be done....I've got a long action M70 classic in 375, 338, and 300. Unfortunately the guy who did the work on it has passed on from what I understand.

As for the Savage suggestion....no thank you, I'm not worried about the cost of having the job done. If that was the case I'd never have bought another rifle after my first one when I was a teenager.

Well, I thought you might want to do it yourself, and the Savage is an easy way to do that. Yes, they can be done. The machining is a lot more intricate, but not impossible. Try contacting Dave Henry in Bently, Karl at K&S in Edmonton, Ralph Martini in BC, and Bill Leeper in BC. Having seen examples of all these gentlemen's work, I would say they are all capable of doing what you want. There's probably others, I just haven't seen enough of thier work to comment. - dan

Thanks for the tips Dan, and I hope I wasn't coming off as a dink, that wasn't my intention;). I'm not a big Savage fan, but that's just my opinion, lots of guys love them. The Win action is the one for this build for me. I've got rifles built on other actions, so its not that I really have a favorite, but I've got the action already and to have the wsm's built on a Win action just seems right

Simply take your M70 to your smith and ask him to fit the two new barrels to it explaining you want to switch back and forth. He should then keep the barrel torque to where you can remove it easily enough. All you will need is an action wrench and a 2"x2" aluminum block with a hole bored in it the same diameter as the barrel ahead of the scope and stock. Make a slit in it so it will close up in a vise. Torque the barrels on somewhere between 40-50 lbs ft [or whatever he recommends] with antiseize on the threads and for good measure you can make a tiny index scribe below the stock line but so you can find it because you know its there.

Cheers

Dave Jennings told me there was a couple of different ways he could change a rifle to a switch barrel system. He also said that a CRF action while doable would present some challenges. The idea certainly has merit if you want to make an expensive custom rifle more versatile. I took the easy road and just chambered the "do it all" .375. You could discuss it with Dave 250-577-3244.
