I know this is a difficult question without a picture.
A friend of mine dropped by for my annual Labour day shoot. He brought with him what he claimed to be a re-chambered Spanish Mauser.
It was clearly stamped 7.62 on the receiver but what was unusual about it was the fact that the barrel was really short (20") maybe and had a M16 style flash suppressor. It also had what appeared to be a tube mag underneath, that wasn't, almost like a gas tube that had some sort of plug in the end. It looked like a hybrid between a semi and a bolt action. The stock appeared shortened as well. There were not many markings, almost as if it had been factory scrubbed. It was still fed from the box type intergral magazine as found on Mausers. The action was definately Mauser style. It also featured a bent down bolt handle.
I am wondering if this was a gunsmith special or was this an accepted factory refurd that was re-chambered to the standard NATO cartridge when Spain became part of NATO?
My assumption is that it is Spanish but it could be something else. He claimed buying it surplus right from one of the many vendors that brough stuff in years back. Any ideas????
