Ideal action for a new build?

I would like to start collecting pieces for a 244 Remington custom project. Yes, I know it's a 6mm Remington but I want the barrel to use the 244 designation lol. Maybe I'll have it stamped 6x57, or 244 Mauser?

Push feed, right handed, 3" or more magazine length, no issues with long bullets or feeding. I am guessing a 700 or a variant thereof.

It will be mated to a 24" med to heavy barrel, most likely a 9 twist, I would like to run heavy for caliber bullets. Maker undecided yet.

Will be using well figured wood as well, I want this one to look as good as I hope it shoots.


Input fellas? I am open to suggestions! Other than cartridge and stock material that is.

EDIT: What is your opinion on making it an AI? 6x57 AI? 244 Mauser AI? Lol

There is a difference between .244 and 6mm Rem... if you are building one, it will surely be a 9 twist... and I would not want a 9 twist stamped .244 (which are well known for 12 twist barrels) Better off going 6X57, which is not necessarily a 6mm Rem... you have to check the blueprint carefully to see exactly what you are getting. I have a 6mm semi-improved with the shoulder set "slightly" forward and slightly steeper... it is a nicely balanced chamber.
 
Nothing wrong with a 700 but really they are very common. Why not find a nice Brno 21/ 22 or any other small ring 98 Mauser variant?

Yeah, the 244 Rem and the 6mm Rem are identical. The only difference was the twist rate of the barrel in the 244 was 1 in 14.
It was made from a necked down 257 bob which is a 7x57 necked down to 257, and the 7x.... Bah, you get the point lol
 
I have a 284 winchester built on a Stiller long action and I am waiting for a 260 build on a Stiller short action. I really like these actions for the price, plus anything Remington (other than scope bases) works for parts...triggers, magazines, stocks, etc. Makes it easy to source accessories and they are a clean, smooth operating action that does not need to be trued or squared or anything at all. Easy for your smith to work on.

I saw that, and if I had the scratch I would have bought it!!

However I want a match grade heavy barrel for this toy, and don't really want controlled feed for what I am going to use it for.
 
Hoyt, mind sending me a few details about that 6mm improved? I am curious and wondering if it would be worth doing it. I probably will anyway as I don't care if I have to make my own brass from any of its ancestors.

It is away being done on a Ruger No.1-RSI... as is a 7.62X57.

I had to improve the X57 to clean up the .243 chamber.. otherwise it would have been a straight neck down.
 
Pretty much any standard LA will work.

Win, Rem, Savage, Tikka, Ruger, custom....

Just depends on the end use purpose.

I would suggest the 8 twist if you want to use heavy for cal bullets.

If feeding from a mag, case shape will matter... but that depends on all the other bits and pieces you will spec out for the rifle.

It will need to feed from a Magazine, don't care if it's detachable or not, if I had to choose I would go with fixed though.

I wondered about the 8 twist, but "guessed" that the extra capacity of the x57 case, especially when improved, should be able to stabilize slightly heavier bullets than the 243 with the same twist. Thanks for the insight!!

I'll keep my eyes open for a rifle with a busted stock, or pooched barrel or whatnot and see what happens I guess. I want this rifle for bench use, and for stand hunting deer at moderate ranges.

I am going with the 6mm Rem due to my love of the cartridge, and because I already have so much for loading for it. If I didn't I might have went with a quarter bore or a 6.5 variant. And my girl has a 243....lol

then it will be time to pick a smith, and have the barrel and action mated, I'll do the rest. Wish I had a lathe :(
 
As much as I love the 99, and think it is way underrated as a hunting rifle, that's not the platform I am looking for in this rifle. Bolt action, heavy barrel, wood stock, push feed, custom job. Simple, reliable, accurate yet elegant.
 
I have many controlled feed Mauser style actions. I want to dump a round in with little care, close the bolt, and fire.

Please post your opinion on an action!! Any style, any make! I would like to here it!
 
find a Sako action ... they are push feed ... but no nasty spring loaded plunger to get stuck .. or constantly torque your cartridge to one side in the chamber ... and you get "controlled" ejection. built in bases are another nice feature. Steel floorplate.. one piece bolt with the bolt handle capable of acting as a safety lug etc etc etc
