Ideal Mapleseed rifle

I'd recommend a 597, but make sure you break it in first. I find the sporter barrel 597 is much more accurate than the 1022. Any ftf issues I have had were related to new mags. To address that I packed 8 rounds in the mag and left it overnight. Never an issue again.

I did mapleseed with a bolt action (because someone else needed my 597) and I'd recommend against that.

I went with a bolt action as did my spouse. I qualified and she came two points away from qualifying. It was the first Mapleseed for both of us.

If you have a choice between a semi and a bolt bring a semi. If you don't have a choice don't sweat it. If you are familar with the rifle and it's personality... you know how to clear jams and your compfy getting behind the rifle.... you will be able to qualify even with a tube fed. If you have a new gun that you are not familar with then you will spend too much time and effort trying to figure out how to make it go bang and as a result you likely won't learn as much as you could have if you were familiar with your equipment

Listen to Yodave. Best advice given. All ur rounds fired never equals all hits and rounds remaining. Ask any skilled PRS shooter

For the guys who've been to these events, what were the most unexpected rifles people have used (both successfully and not)?

There was a guy using a bolt action Savage .17 HMR, I don't think he succeeded. Surprising, mainly due to ammo cost for all the rounds fired in the day! Most used a 10/22. I used my Lilja barreled Remington 597 and qualified on all 3 targets. I like the 597 over 10/22s, mag changes are very easy with last shot bolt hold open, and the mag release is on the side easily accessed by your trigger finger and the mag just drops out. The trigger is a tad heavy at ~5 pounds, made me shake my head a little during the training phase as I quickly realized I needed to pay much more attention to trigger control. Things I can get away with off a bench show up big time when shooting unsupported, even only at 25 yards. 5 pounds is a lot of force coming back that will slap your rifle around when the trigger breaks and you're not coming straight back.

I'd like to go to another and use my CZ 455 Full Stock with iron sights, I like a challenge :)

Most of the rifles at the event were pretty stock 10/22s with scopes, with a couple very high end modified 10/22s. Looking at who qualified at end of the event, the rifle used really did not matter, it came down to the experience of the shooter.

Also, I was actually the only one at the event using a bolt action (CZ 452 Lux), and also the only one without a scope. Luckily I qualified in a few of my MQT's.
