I've been leaning towards Bushnell legend ultra hd line for my lil rimfire. Primary use is squirrels rabbits and various varmints like starlings crows and groundhogs. However I'm open to other scopes to look at. Ideally around $500 or less. Minimum of 3-9 to a usable higher magnification. Shots go from 10 yards to long pokes at crows and such (300 yards) past 220 yards most are reasonably safe but I'd like to see what I miss clearly. 17 gr bullet and wind don't mix

Couple brands are ziess terra or conquest lines. Bushnell I've always had good luck with. However I want better than a banner. I'd like to hear about sightron rimfire series and may give hawke optics another chance as I've read favorable reports from trusted members here.
Squirrel season for me will be here soon
Any other worthwhile contenders?

Hey brybenn~I recently tracked down a Weaver V-16, fine crosshair/target dot for my 17M2 and I'm encouraged by it so far. In all honesty, I hope to use it on gophers out west some day...so in other words..the VERY fine target dot is OK for me because the "targets" are light in color. These V-16 scopes are well-loved in the US where they're easy to find/buy, but I'm impressed with it so far. Enough that I'm ordering a Rifle Basix trigger for the rifle itself today.

It has the finest crosshairs I've ever seen, so this is definitely a fair-weather/sunny day scope...but the glass seems nice to my eyes.

I love the 17M2! (never tried one on a groundhog though~how do they work?)

It downright flattens them. If you hit high there's chunks in the sky at under 70 yards. Out at 150 yards they just flatten out. I punch a tiny entrance and a 3/4 dime size exit on a Fox at 100 yards. Dead right there!
As for the very fine cross hairs I don't think that will work for me as I hunt in hardwoods. Often in shadows shooting at mainly black squirrels. I had a fine cross hair and target dot Redfield 4x on it. Surprising clear glass but I hated the reticle. That scope is on my turkey now
The 17 mach 2 is an awesome cartridge for edible small game. My buddy south of the border uses it for turkey. Pics prove a body shot broadside thru the wings doesn't hurt much meat at all and his word is they just fold way out to 150 yards. Head shots for anything close
Plus it saves me having to aim high or low when using a 22 Lr. The lil 17 shoots just flat enough. Perfect for squirrels and bunnies

Hey brybenn~just reread your thread starter..and thought I'd also mention that I have a Sightron S1, 4-12x AO, HHR on my CZ452 Varmint, .22LR. I think they're a great scope for the money, and certainly nicer (in my opinion) than the Hawke Varmint SF. Had one of those on an HMR once, never again.

The S1/452 was the gopher gun I put together for my trip west this past spring, and boy did allot of gophers find out how effective that combo is! :) I'd personally have no hesitation putting one on a 17M2 and while fine...I think thickness of the reticle would be to your liking.

Burris has a 4.5-14 with side focus. It works fantastic with my Marlin 782 in WMR. It's a keeper. Or a used Sightron SII 4-16X44. I think i saw one on the EE.
