Ideas for dedicated LR rig

i would look for a used anything, but a Remington with a 308/473 bolt face that is also bedded would be ideal. not sure why so much hype on this website over savage and stevens guns. me all the other gunsmiths i have known generally dislike them, but to each his own. Henry Rempel could build you a gun with a Smith barrel that would make you very happy. It also depends on what it will be for. 243AI is a hot cartridge and will not last very long. Best accuracy in the range of 1000-1500 rounds tops. Think about a dasher if you are ok forming cases or even just a 6br. they are good to 1000 yards no problem. there are some very good 6mm competition bullets out there like the berger hybrids that dont need a 243ai to make shoot very accurately at long range.

Use will be hunting and steel/target slaying. Don't worry too much about portability for the hunting side of things. If I have to hike much there's always the 7WSM Montana. ;)

Come on, guys. $2000. There's gotta be some ideas. I'd like to hear both factory rifle choices, as well as other preferences.

Thanks to those who have made suggestions already.

Used Savage package rifle in .308.
McGowen or Shilen barrel.
Timney trigger or better.
Choate Tactical or B&C Medalist.
Bushnell 4200 6-24X40 (or similar)
Barrel nut wrench and go gauge.

That should put you in the $2000 range. I did pretty much the same with a 300 WM. I'm quite pleased with the result.
Purchased the barrel, stock, trigger, wrench, and guage from Mystic Precision.

Buy this, I don't need another Musgrave.......but if I did.
Now you have $700 to play with for glass and rings. No dicking around looking for replacement parts, stocks, triggers, or bedding. Scope it and shoot it. Winning would be up to the nut behind the butt.

With 1000 round down the barrel you will get at least another 3000 before you need to replace it. A .243 AI will last about 1200-1500 max.

Stevens 200 idea is your best bang for buck man. Easy to do on 2k.

Action $325
Barrel $450
Rifle Basix trigger $100
EGW 20MOA mount $55
Sightron 36x $550 or a Bushnell 4200 6-24x50 Tactical $750
Boyds Varmint Thumbhole $140

This I have done a few times and have never been disappointed by the end product. In fact I am going to start another one here shortly.
