So I got this win 70 pre 64 action "Classic Sporter B.O.S.S." In 7mm RM. I love it, the action that is... But I don't like the overall barrel length nor do I like the blast due to that damn BOSS unit.

My plan was to send her out to Alberta Tactical Rifle and have them work some magic.
I'm going to provide the stock, a custom from my shop.
This rifle will be required to kill to 500 yards with precision and if I want to go to some long range shoots to have some fun far beyond 600.
So, what can I do to a win 70 7mm RM? I see most discussions and builds based on remingtons, savage and many others, but not muc discussions on pimping out the model 70's
I'm keeping the rifle with zero plans to switch to another action so keep that in mind when replying ;)

"...that damn BOSS unit..." It's been added to a pre-64. BOSS wasn't introduced until 1994. Take it off, remove threads/cut to whatever length and re-crown.

I'm sure he means a post-64 control round feed action (based on the pre-64 design).

In any event there are lots of Winchester precision rifles out there. FN makes a military rifle on that platform.

Give it to a smith and have him blue print it, put on a good quality pipe (26 inch at least), change the stock as you mentioned. #### you could even put on custom bottom metal and a AICS magazine.

I bet she would shoot then. But if she shoots now just ditch the boss but you will have a shorter barrel (which you already have most likely) as the boss is included in your overall barrel length.

That's a better action then a remington in my books. I'm sure ATR could do all of that and more.

Ya, I suppose I could have mentioned it is a modern model 70 with the pre 64 feed and extractor. It came from the factory with the boss.
Any barrel preferences you. guys could pass on?

Rick will take care of the blueprinting, never you fear. I would rebarrel otherwise you are just p*ssing money away. A medium-heavy barrel finishing at 26" or 28" will go a long way to stiffening the rifle and increasing the accuracy. Rick installed a barrel from RKS on my M70 Classic and so far it's showing a lot of promise (thought I do need to dedicate some more time to load development). Mt father has a M70 Classic in 7RM that was built by Rocky Mountain Rifles (Corlane Sports) and it's a great rifle. I think the barrel is around 30" and it is a heavy beast of a bull barrel, but it shoots.

How bout a nice 264 win mag to compliment the win action. Caliber is all personal choice of course but lately I've taken a liking to 6.5's for some of the reasons you mentioned. As far as barrels go I only have experience with gaillard and Ron smith and both have worked out well. I have a 1 in 8.5 twist for my 6.5's and that stabilizes 140's FWIW

Shilen, Krieger, Gaillard (CDN), or McClennan (CDN). Those are a few of my recommendations. You're going to have a sweet rifle

I would give your M70 Classic action (the post-64 M70 with CRF) to a good 'smith (like ATR) and let them install the barrel that they prefer to work with. There are a plethora of good barrels out there these days, and half the battle is in the installation. You'll get a better install job if the 'smith uses a barrel that they like working with. JMO.

lack of knowledge BOSS? what is this

B.O.S.S. browning optimal stabilisation system IIRC. What it is is a muzzle brake that acts like the weight on some anshcutz target rifles. By threading it in and out it effectively changes the way the barrel vibrates allowing it to be tuned for whatever load you are shooting. It achieves the same goal as loading for a rifle, that is making the bullet exit at the most stable point in the barrels motion.

Essentially handloading for the non-handloader. Buy the ammo and tune the rifle to it rather than vice-versa. The only reason I never bought such a beast was the manure-spreader. Sure, you can get the BOSS-CR but they're tough to come by. And I'm a handloader so not being able to tinker with the load would leave me feeling used and dirty.:D

The BOSS or Ballistic Optimizing Shooting System, was first introduced on the Browning rifles. It is a brake and harmonic balancer. With graduated marks on barrel and a ring on the Boss.
The unit can be calibrated to your load by starting with a suggested "sweet spot" that corresponds to known factory bullet weights.
What it also does and this feature works and I do like it is with an adjustment of the boss in the field I can switch from 150 gr to a 165gr and maintain the same point of impact without altering the settings on my optic.
BUT it's ungodly loud and has given me permanent hearing damage from a shot I took at a deer a few years back where the muzzle was beside a tree. The back blast rocked my head and my left ear rang for a week. LOL
And it just makes her too long for field carry in the bush when I'm chasin critters.
