Hello guys,

Anybody have any ideas on what would be a cool next purchase? I'm fairly new to this so there's probably alot of cool Non Restricted military rifles out there that I don't know of.. I already have bolt action stuff so I was thinking something semi auto, maybe something that was fully auto but mod'd to semi and pinned with a 5round mag.. Is there any non restricted semi auto that has more than a 5 round mag?

Let's hear some ideas:D

Thanks ! :50cal:

You would have to be grandfathered for c/a's, and you can't even take them out to shoot them, so you can forget that idea.......:)
Get an M1 while they are available.....

A cheap option for semi-auto fun would be a Ljungman AG-42, they go for about $275-$350. $175 will get you an SKS...

I have to admit, when I started I was all over the map with milsurps. But I ended up getting to the point where I realized I didn't have any direction and as a result, there were only a few things I really enjoyed, the rest was just spur of the moment gorging. Best advice I got from a chap at the shop was to focus on a nation, era or type and build a collection that way.

It was good advice. Mind you I didn't apply it for a few months while I tried to figure out what it what direction I wanted to go in. I ended up looking at what I had and the pieces that made me most excited were the ones I kept. I ended up selling all the rest. I don't regret selling the items I did, and so I know it was a good decision.

Now to be fair, I collect two different areas, and I have certain things outside of those areas, certain 'must haves' like a 22, SKS, shotgun.

Anyhow, the only reason I mentioned this is that you reminded me of myself when I started, really excited and out to buy whatever milsurp I could find.

So are the SKS good shooting reliable rifles? What calibre do they fire and how many rounds are allowed in the magazine? Are they usually one caliber or are they available chambered in different calibers?

thanks guys

All centre fire semi-auto rifles are required to be pinned to 5 rounds, with the exception of the Garand, which will hold 8.

The SKS is a decent rifle which will go bang every time you pull the trigger. Accuracy varies, anywhere from 6 to 2 inch groups are reported at the 100m mark. All SKS's shoot 7.62x39... same as the AK-47.

There are also a ton of accesories available for the SKS, but they aren't needed.

Either way, the SKS is a good, reliable, cheap to shoot, plinker for any shooter.

RVD,

If you look at the forums, you will see that there's a whole section devoted to the SKS. A few people dislike them, but a vast majority of us either enjoy them greatly or at least purchase one for occasional practice. If you check the Canada Ammo website, they have 1140 round cases for about $200 shipped to your door, but are selling out fast. Marstar also used to carry the same ammo. Currently Marstar and SIR seem to be out of the rifles, though perhaps Lever Arms or a couple of dealers out west may have them. You should be paying under $200 for a Chinese SKS shipped to your door. Even if you decide to collect in other areas, it never hurts to have one SKS.

Mosin Nagant rifles and carbines, the rifle of Czarist Russia and the USSR are currently readily available in many varients. SIR has the 91/30 rifle and M44 carbine (with side folding bayonet) for $139.99 and $149.99 respectively. If you check the Tradeex Canada site, you'll find a far wider selection of rifles and carbines. Currently there is a dearth of surplus ammo, though soft point ammo from Igman and Privi Partizan are being imported for $10-15 a box, which is a bit less than what you'd pay for domestic ammo in similar calibres. A couple of dealers (Marstar, Districorp) have had 7.62x54 ammo in the past. I should also note that the this cartridge is considerably stronger than what the SKS uses, making it better on larger game. On a related note, the Russian Tokarev rifles are semi-autos that are sometimes imported, though costing closer to the tune of about $500 if you can get your hands on one.

There's currently some Russian Capture 98k Mausers taken from the Germans at the end of WW2 that were re-arsenalled and put into storage. Tradeex has a few left, and they are both interesting historical pieces and with a good bore, decent shooters.

If you were a more experienced shooter who likes to reload, I'd also suggest the Swiss K31 carbines, which are of a straight pull bolt design. They are also reasonably priced and highly renowned for accuracy. Despite the 7.5x55 designation of their ammo, the bullets are .30 caliber which is highly available after you've gotten the dies and brass. It does not look however as though the commercial ammunition being imported to the US will be available here any time soon.

I hope that gives you a few interesting ideas to ponder and check out....

Cheers,

Frank

Besides to legally own a converted auto of any kind you have to be part of the rare 12(3) class.. If you are a 12(3) GF, then go to a gun auction as usually when a 12(3) gun comes up, the room likely will only have a couple of 12(3) folks, which means you may be able to pick up a CA for cheap.\

And if your not a 12(3), just keep dreaming and voting Liberal.

thanks for all the advice guys, i've been reading up on the SKS, and yes i finally noticed the SKS section AFTER i started this thread LOL .. anyways, I already have a very nice Mosin Nagant M44 so another Russian battle rifle wouldn't hurt lol.. Maybe the SKS will be my next purchase..

since you have a M44 already, look at an SVT40. same ammo and it eats that laquered czech stuff that is so problematic in bolt actions with no problems.

If you can get one, which you most likely can judging by how many I've sen up for sale in EE here on gunnutz, go for the CZ 858.Great shooter, looks cool and chambers the cheap 7.62x39 round
