Ideas For the Best Duck Gun ?

Any shotgun will shoot but my Wingmaster 870 (early eighties) stands the test of time. Mine has been with me from the beginning of my hunting career, has filled my freezer year after year with no problems. For a young man on a budget with a young family perhaps, It's the greatest value in the express models.

When you get a bit older and have a bit more disposable income and can spend more on the ultimate shotgun, bet on the Benelli and you may never use you're other guns ever again.:(
I have the SBE 1 in 24 inch turkey cammo and is truely a work of art. Use it for everything from duck , turkey, coyote, to slug hunting for deer. Fits and shoots so well, like it was made for me by some Italian craftsman on the other side of the pond.....;)
 
I went with the Remington 887 Nitro and really like it alot. It eats everything I've fed it, and the recoil pad and fiber optic sights are very nice. It shoots very naturally for me and for $400 I don't think there's a better gun.
The only thing that made me wonder was that at first the follower stuck a couple of times in the tube and I couldn't load another shell in the tube until I pushed really hard on it and it gave in. It only did it twice in the first 50 rounds and then it worked itself in and hasn't happened in the next 100 I've shot out of it.
 
Find a gun that fits YOU...I've hunted with guys that love their old SxS. I hunted with a bolt action for a while and loved it. Heck I've even seen a few single shots out on the water...Shoot whatever fits/feels the best. It does not need to cost you $500+ to get out and knock down some ducks.
 
If you are on a budget or will only be hunting a couple days a season an 870 will do fine. They last forever, cycle everything, and make an excellent paddle or club if needed. However get into a few high volume hunts shooting heavy loads and you will "feel" why autoloaders are so popular with high volume hunters. A good autoloader will manage recoil efficiently and come with sims which allow for cast and drop adjustment (and even LOP on some models) correcting most fit issues. The most obvious choices would be the Winchester SX3, Benelli SBEII/M2 and/or Beretta Urika2/Xtrema2 but I would also look at Benelli Vinci, Browning Maxus and Beretta A400 before I made a decision.
 
I kept my eyes open until I found a stoeger p350 on sale for 325, came with 5 chokes in full camo, Ive since put 5000 rounds down it and not one problem.

long barrell for hauling in the bush but other then that its perfect for me
 
duck guns

I have lots of duck guns: Rem 1100, Remm mag 58, Remm 870, WIn mod 50, win mod 12.
All these guns will be sold cheap when i die because My wife thinks i only paid $ 100.00 for each of these.
So if you read my obiturary get here quick.
 
You don't need 3" chambers.

I would not use steel in an old fixed Full choke gun; not recommended.

Any make of pump gun (generally the most affordable action type) with choke tubes would be fine. Remington, Winchester, Mossberg, Browning, etc. They'll all do the job.

What is far more important than the make of gun is learning how to wingshoot.
 
I would go for a used 870 Wingmaster and have the full choke reamed out to modified. You should be able to do this for less than the cost of a new Express and have a nicer gun that is less likely to be a lemon than a new Remington.

3" chambers are nice to have, but not absolutely necessary.

I 100% agree, these are a once and a lifetime investment. I have one and they are a great gun and top quality. But as the old saying goes, if it doesn't fit you properly, you won't be able to hit nothing with it. Buy what fits you the best. Good luck in your search.:)

on a serious note, I have a Baikal MP153, 2 3/4" - 3 1/2" semiauto, came with 4 or 5 chokes rated for steel, haven't used it for duck yet, but I feel it'd be great
