identify rear sight

Does anyone know what gun this sight is intended for? (Photos of a complete sight and one spare vertical leaf.)

From the shapes I see it reminds me of a Remington 788 sight...

One of the kids I mentor has the same sights on his pellet rifle. I believe it's one of the Chinese types imported into the country ten or so years ago.

When I see him next, I'll have a look.

I'm leaning towards air rifle like bearhunter has said. Appears crude.
