Received this original WWII photo and was wondering it the rifle being cleaned is a K98 (not 100% sure):

Guessing at context here...

Unit armourer in the field on the Eastern Front, "borrowing" a peasant's house for his shop.

Basing this on the unfinished tree pole frame around the window (something more common to the boonies in Eastern Europe than Western Europe by that time period - also, prettey heavy looking wool shirts, so it's cold, even indoors, where they're working).

The tools on the table are WAY beyond what an infantryman would have at his disposal to work on a K98K...

Hoping someone pokes holes in my theory or rounds it out... Interesting photo, and the context intrigues me.

Thats a VERY big window for a 'peasants' shack. More likely a hunt club that was finished in a 'rustic' fashion. It doesnt say 'unit armourer' to me fwiw.

Pre-electricity most homes had big windows. It is also a quick way to tell when a home was built by looking at it.

Well the suggestion was 'something more common to the boonies in Eastern Europe' ... I'm thinking you havent had to transport a lot of relatively large sheets of glass to a remote location ('boonies') 'pre-electricity'....and then realized how much additional coal/wood you had to burn to heat that room with big windows during the winter.
