I was at a gunshop that had a 870 marked as a 870 Police. How can you tell this is a true 870 Police and is there such a model ? The gun had a 18 inch barrel no rifle sites, just a raised front bead, there was an orange magazine follower, the barrel was parkerized but could not tell if the reciever was as well as it looked liek the finish on 870 expresses. There was no markings on the reciever designating it as a 870 Police all it siad was 870 express magnum and the barrel was marked 2 3/4 and 3 '' and imp cylinder. It also had synthetic stocks that looked fairly sturdy not like the injected type on the express. This was also a new gun.

I am interested in buying it only if its truely an 870 police as they have the beefier internal parts.

Any help identifying it would be helpful.

thanks

If the receiver was marked 870 express magnum, it is an Express model. The receiver on a 870P will be marked, "Remington 870 Police Magnum".

Gunshops like to sell stuff as tactical and police whenever they can.
This means if it has a synthetic stock and a dark finish on the metal= police.

If it does not fit into the above category and does not have a lot of wood or stainless, it's "tactical".

I have a tactical trigger lock on my desk right now. Used by the LAPD SWAT team to subdue angry shoplifters.

"...Gunshops like to sell stuff..." Yep. Adds $100 or more to the price.
"...the finish on 870 Expresses..." As in blued? There is an 18" barreled 870P with a bead sight(not 'site'), but it comes either totally blued or totally parkerized. Sounds like it's a regular 870 with an aftermarket barrel.

I just wanted to make sure this was not some new model as I have never seen a police and this is on the rack as new gun. I have not seen it but i think I will query the owner on this fact as I just might be a express with an aftermarket parkerized berrel with a front bead as nowhere on the gun does it state police.

I saw a couple of 11-87 Police models at the last gun show I was at. Only one said that it was a police, but both of the serial no.'s started with P. Don't have an 870P, but is it possible that their serial no.'s start with P as well?

If it says express, than it's an express. I'd pass, unless the price was dirt cheap.

Police Magnums have alot of upgrade features that a Wingmaster or Express don't have. They are WORTH the extra cash if your life depends on one.

cheers Darryl

True, but you can easily upgrade an old Wingmaster with the "police" parts (springs mostly) for quite cheap. It's much cheaper to upgrade an old Wingmaster than it is to buy a new police model. As a matter of fact, if you keep your eye open for bargains it would cost you about the same as a new express model, if not less.

or if it looked like this...
