Hey guys. I was wondering how many pistol shooters have been resisted to buy an aftermarket part for their pistol due to not being able to fit in the "idpa box". Items such as raised sights or mag bases for mag wells, etc etc.
 
Anyone who intends to shoot IDPA competitively. Most club shooters I know who shoot regularly do so just to play within the equipment rules. Most folks don't cheat when they play the action shooting sports from my experience. There is a not for score arrangement in IDPA where your scores are not included in the match results. The caveat being you must use an IDPA compliant holster.

For idpa, I have no issue using basic pistols. I’ve used ppx, ppq, mp’s, glocks. I’ll be giving a p99 in 40 a try this year. It’s really about your skill sets over equipment.
The reality is that if you’re using the sights and not muscle memory, you’ll be at a disadvantage in the ranking. So find what works for you and compete against yourself not the other guys.

I don't give it much thought really, I've added magwells etc that have put me into different divisions, most of the people I shoot with are in it for the fun,,the reality is most of us will never shoot at the national or international level so I change what I want for fun and to try things out. I'm sure it would be a lot different if I was shooting matches that mattered :)
 
The equipment rules are pretty liberal. The mods that are not allowed really don't amount to much and have little to do with improving the gun anyway. I am not sure aware of many main stream pistols that don't fit in the box for one of the divisions. Some of the widest magwells might get you into a "Not for Score" situation and of course the IPSC Open guns don't play in IDPA nor would they fit in the box. Most handguns you buy today have more than adequate sights and triggers for what we have to do in IDPA. I have spent more money satisfying me ego then I have on my shooting performance. I have made SS and Expert with stock entry level guns with the same score as my premium pistols. You would think the brain and the wallet would get the message but alas Mr. Ego dominates a lot of gun decisions.

Did you want to clarify the bolded part, like not needing the sights for only close distances? I use my sights for all shots, except very close, and strongly feel those that don't use their sights for mid-to-longer shots, will be at a disadvantage.

I do like Edgy's attitude. He loves to have fun! Keep doing what you're doing, Edgy! :)

Find a gun you shoot well and stick with it. Better success will be seen with proper practice than buying gadgets.

Having said that, another CGNer and I have a challenge on our upcoming season opener. He will use my unmodified G19 and I will use his slightly custom SP-01. I will shoot it in SSP. I have finished behind him so far in all our matches. We will see if the change in guns will affect our performance!

I agree with Edgy, it's for fun! Because I suck:).

In my opinion, the spirit of IDPA is using a carry gun, would you put a flared magwell on a pistol carried IWB?
I may be weird though, I don't use my Shadows in IDPA, I can't see ever carrying a steel DA/SA. I like the gun better, I shoot the platform better, but I don't think it fits what I consider the flavour of the game?
Everyone is in it for their own reasons, run whatcha like, OP! Let that freak flag fly!

No, I don't;). Something keeps getting in the way of my practice time though...I shot a .22 last weekend for 10 minutes! Yay!
Heh, that monstrosity is on it's way back from RDS milling, now I need to nail down my muscle memory for presentation rather than sight alignment....(pokes at jimbo14 with a sighting system that I really doubt he was even talking about in his post:))
 
lol! Nope, I was referring to iron sights. I'm going blind though so I'll be joining the red dot crowd soon enough. Still most likely on a steel gun though. I'm a he-man and have a good belt and don't need to carry plastic. (poking back) lol!
 
I was shooting a shooting tree the other day on our range with my Great. Grand-dad's Colt New Navy .41LC. Held my own against a Shadow2. Only 3 plates a side. Won a couple of runs. Gun was made in 1892, still stock. If the gun has has more than 200 rounds through it in the last 117 years I would be surprised. I have it running making .41LC brass our of 38spl cases. Because I am using the 38spl case as the foundation for the case I could use Jetloader speed loaders. We still have our 6" exemption for revolver division for Level 1 matches so why not? Should be fun.

Lol! Yeah, let's take a swing at this new-fangled pistol dot thingy. Back in my day, the muskets didn't even have sights, and we could still shoot the wings off of flies...grumbles, mutters, and walks uphill in the snow (both ways!) to the gun range...
Good belts are key. Way better investment than go-fast parts....not that that's a poke at you OP!
 
Yup. We gear up in the club house, pour a cup of coffee, take our pills and forget where we are going. Four hours later we wake up, take our gear off and go home. If the wife asks how was shooting, the answer is: "About the same as last month, Harry isn't looking all that good and Paul is deaf as rock."
