IDPA - Duty Rig - Military

MODS - before this spirals rapidly downward like a Stuka bombing the Maginot Line (even more so), please lock. I think I've got more than what I asked for originally.

Cheers

As a matter of interest do the Canadian Forces allow you to take your weapons off the base in Canada? Just curious. /QUOTE]

General answer to a good (general) question...

While on duty or training requiring the carriage of weapons, yes.

Let me counter with another general question:

Are civilians allowed to CCW in Canada?

Cheers,

Steph

No and I don't know what the connecton is. IDPA is a "SPORT" based upon CCW in the US. The Sport has spread to 0ver 19 countries including Russia of all places. The marathon is based upon a Greek warriors run, the Biathalon on Alpine Troop escapades of wars past. Running a maraton doesn't make you a 300 BC Greek warrior anymore than shooting the Biathalon makes you a member of the Swiss Army.

My question related to the use of duty gear out of curiosity. I would assume members of the Armed forces wishing to avail themselves of this exception would be shooting FN High Powers or Sigs of their own. I would think most LEO's take their weapons home with them when off duty but that may well vary from one department to another.

Jim S - If IDPA provides a venue for our troops to practice before deploying then by all means we will do everything we can to accomdate them at our shoots. For deploying troops I would recomend no fees be attached to their attendance but I can only recomend; it is up to the individual Clubs and the Match Directors to decide.

Take Care

Bob

Don't bin the thread man, I think the OP was a fair one and I certainly don't think that anyone is trying to "change" things to suit them to any advantage. I think the spirit of the sport is enhanced by allowing the members to use their gear, there is certainly zero advantage to using a 6004 with closed magazine pouches instead of say a Blade Tech DOH or other IDPA approved holster?...and I can tell you there is NO advantage to wearing body armour and other associated gear while shooting unless a bad back is the goal.

I know, and I agree. But there have been numerous PMs circulating regarding the issue, and I question the continuing value of my original question. Not trying to stifle debate, but I have the answers I need. And further discussion will ensue, believe me. There are other considerations here (like a COmmander in LFWA who LOVES shooting!!!) that we need to leverage, too!

My personal belief is that any opportunity to pump rounds downrange (despite the nay-sayers out there) wearing your battle order helps muscle memory. (Who cares what the scenarios are, really) It's the reality of going..."Oh Crap...that's a BAD place for my mag pouch" and adjusting it. A two-way range is the WRONG place to learn that lesson.

But thanks to all for your input and thoughts. I don't like to see negativity coming out when our only goal is to give serving members the chance to engage in a sport they clearly enjoy, with the potential for big dividends down the road, and get well-deserved credit for it.

Cheers,

...mmmmm, Stukas......

I don't speak for IDPA or the ATHL, but if competed in the course of fire with battle rattle, I think your scores should stand.

Alll of the Military guys I shoot with, serving and retired run with IDPA concealment rules and eschew the duty rig idea. I mean, running the competition in full Battle Order?!?! When I was in that crap weighed at least 35 kilos! Try running a stage in a small pistol bay in that stuff (I have) and you'll find you're wishing for the CCW concept right smartly. But if you really wanna run the full show, ask around at the next match, you'll find the service rifle guys pretty quick. ;)

Be lucky,

-MLP.

Let's discuss it tomorrow as we pump rounds downrange!
