I've scheduled an IDPA Familiarization & Skills clinic for Saturday, 31 Jan 09 at the Okotoks Rifle & Pistol Club (indoor).
Topics will include:
Loading and unloading.
Drawing from holster and re-holstering.
Gripping the firearm with strong hand, weak hand, and freestyle.
Sight alignment.
Trigger control.
Reloading (slide lock, tactical reload and reload w/retention).
Moving with a drawn handgun.
Shooting stances, including prone shooting and barricade shooting.
Clearing malfunctions.
How matches are scored.
Range commands and procedures.
You'll need:
a reliable handgun - 9mm/.38 Spl or larger in calibre
a belt style holster (no drop leg, cross draw or 'small of back' holsters allowed)
2-3 magazines or 3-4 speed loaders
suitable magazine/speedloader pouches
eye & hearing protection
a concealement garment (light jacket or vest)
200-300 rounds of ammunition
(Those that lack a pistol or equipment and are serious about taking up IDPA, I have limited stuff to lend for this clinic.)
The fee for the clinic will be $25.00 (to cover the cost of the range rental, targets, tape, etc.)

And there will be an opportunity to test your new skills the following day (1 Feb 09) by shooting the IDPA Classifier ( http://www.idpa.com/classify.asp ) The fee will be an additional $25.00 and you'll need a minimum of 90 rounds. (This will also be conducted at the Okotoks indoor range)
Both events are 'stand alone' so you can participate in the clinic and forego the classifier or if you are already skilled in the use of your handgun you can skip the clinic and just come out for the calssifier. And, of course, you're welcome to do both.
Neither event is mandatory to shoot IDPA but are highly recommended.
Membership in IDPA is also not a prerequisite but I will have application forms available both days for individuals that wish to join.
