IDPA Familiarization & Skills Clinic

Mass,

I take it the match on the 27th is still on?
Is there going to be an opportunity to Classify before the match?

Thanks!

Mike

The classifier will be incorporated in the match. You should be getting an e-mail with the Match Copy attached (If you haven't already.....)

Too bad the clinic was cancelled...was looking forward to it (gotta love Alberta spring);)

Can a person still show up for the match on the 27th without the clinic or am I better off attending one prior to a competition? (I'll admit it...I'm totally new to competition shooting ).

Thanks Mass,

Steph

No, the clinic is a nice to have, not a must have. I encourage to come and shoot the match. You'll get lots of help from the other shooters.

Yes, but date is TBD. Wheras the clinic is a 'nice to have' it's certainly not a hard & fast prerequisite. We have many members that have never participated in the clinic and just started shooting matches. They've done just fine.

That being said, we have a match coming up on Sunday. Everyone is welcome to come and participate. You'll get all the help you need from the more experienced shooters. It's not rocket science, folks.......

I hear what you are saying and I know I would be comfortable with getting dropped in running, but the two guys I had pumped up for the clinic aren't so.

For someone who hasn't shot an action shooting event before, it is intimidating to them. I asked if they wanted to now go check the match out and maybe give it a try instead and they said no. The clinic was more "accessible" to them, if you want to call it that, for giving IDPA a try.

I've seen this before in the service rifle matches at Spruce I shoot at. I've asked about 10 people if they wanted to go rifle shooting and as soon as they find out a match is involved, they think they might "get embarrassed" or not know what to do when, and back out. Only someone really gung ho, and usually with some experience knowing what to expect, ends up coming along.

All I'm saying is I thought your clinic was a excellent idea to introduce someone new to IDPA and an easier sell.

I look forward to when you do reschedule the clinic. As far as I'm personally concerned, I'll happily be checking a match out sometime the next two months regardless.

Cheers!

bullwhip, I am going to give it a go... I have not used a holster for anything but a storage device before but even if I have to walk thru each stage I want to participate.

The IDPA familiarization that Mass facilitate is I am sure great for some of the new shooters that are a little nervious but really there is absolutely nothing to be worried about.

I went down to Vegas last week to shoot a major match with not one previous match of any sort under my belt. I survived no problem. The people that are making it a competative match are themselves. It is not competative at all in my opinion.

I know it is hard to explain it to some people, but rest assured it is easy and everyone there is ready to help a new shooter.

The IDPA Familiarization & Skills Clinic has been re-scheduled for Saturday June 7th at the Mountain View Marksman Association West of Olds. Start time is 9 AM and will go until mid to late afternoon (depending on the number of participants).

The following day we will be holding the IDPA Classifier. This will allow the new shooters to practice the skills learned at the clinic and it will provide an opportunity to be classified.

If interested in participating please send an e-mail to athl@shaw.ca

Well, 14 new shooters (and 2 recent new members) braved the intermittant downpours to complete the IDPA Skills & Familiarization Clinic today. From the fedback I got, I think everyone learned a lot AND had a good time despite the crappy weather.

Regrettably, with the large turnout, I was too busy to take any photos.

Hopefully the forecast light rain will hold off for tomorrow's Classifier.....
